ACT 6 puck clutch worn out all ready!!! less than 2 years!!
I had an act 6 puck clutch put in only 2 years ago, and its worn out. i paid 375 for it plus another 350 for install including flywheel install. Why has it worn out so quickly.
only spun tires maybe 3 times never abused it and now its gone. clutch says it works better with heat but after 20 min of driving i can let the clutch all the way out give gas till 6k and wont budge. if i park the car let it cool down for about 3 hours i can get another 20min drive time. If i new this would only last 2 years with no abuse i would of got a diff car. cant afford new clutch every 2 years.
btw whats the average life spand for this clutch with my set up with minamle abuse. Also a good write up for clutch install would be awsome cant find one on search. going to get a cheap one now since a 400 act dont last long.
Also iam skeptical of the mazda shop who did this work. maybe they put a diff clutch in or put it in wrong, b/c this is redicules.

pull it apart and figure out what actually failed, if the clutch disc is worn you can replace just the disc for less than $100, if the disc still has meat on it then your pressure plate springs weakened over time and the pressure plate needs to be replaced, a new pressure plate runs just over $100 depending on the make.

only 18k on act clutch. (btw yes i can drive a stick.lol) after rebuilt drove on old clutch for 11k. went out at 136k stock clutch. then bought this act one.
when it rains b/f this clutch went it seemed to slip from when i first got it, but only if the bottom of the car got wet. now wont evern move.
^^^^^^^ so karack you think i wont need a new counter weight, and other stuff should be good right. just checkout the pressure plate or clutch disc? where would i go for these parts. only can find kits on ebay and other links. i WILL NEVER GO BACK to the rx-7 shop who did all my work.

Clutch replacement is pretty straight-forward if you're doing it yourself. Be warned though, it can get uncomfortable and somewhat stressful being stuck under your car for several hours...

if the flywheel is excessively heat spotted then it may need to be resurfaced though light flywheels are tough to resurface and most machine ships wont even do them.
refine your searches and you will find what you need.

how much free play do you have in your pedal? it could just be a misadjusted clutch causing the issue.

you have to keep in mind that ceramic grabs so much harder than a orginic that it will cause the pp and flywheel to wear out fast. an act is a performance clutch, its not made to last forever, its just made to hold.

I installed an XTD 6-puck a year ago when I put in a temporary J-spec.
Last month when I installed the rebiuld, I saw about half of the clutch life was used, so I expect 2 years total.
Also I measured .020" wear in the ACT street light flywheel face.
I plan to replace the clutch & reface the flywheel next winter.
Racing stuff, in general, is made to go faster, not last longer.

a friend got 9000 miles out of his Spec 6 puck on his Eclipse. I had a 4 puck for a whole year on my N/A daily driver. If you want to drive it smoothly, you need to slip it. All that slipping will wear the hell out of it.

damb if my flywheel is bad thats even worse cost like 475. i did daily drive it so from what i hear is thats bad for that clutch. since i dont race to much and drive it easy most of the time should i go with an OEM clutch. for longer life. also would an oem clutch work with my flywheel. i cant afford for it to get reserfaced. i hope this aint a big problem.
i dont mind spending time doing it just have to take a dayoff for it.

its not bad lying under the car if its raised high enough and if you dont have tranny fluid or oil leaking all over the place. wonder how long a dual friction will last???

1 more note. the clutch chatterd all the time from nutral to first. came to this site and found out from other post that this is normal. but by the looks of things and doing some research on other sites this was not good.
about 5 months after i got this clutch and flywheel put in i had to take it back b/c of horrible vibrations. car guy said it was allied wrong or not in right. he took it apart and fixed it for free. i always had a bad feeling about this. they screwd up bad, and maybe the first 5 months did permant damage. when i cruised around the beach in stop and go traffic on the clutch pedel all the time it would vibrate a little till i got going. this happend even after i took it back.

2 years sounds about right. I had a ACT 6 puck with the racingbeat aluminum flywheel. I really beat the crap out it with lots of road racing, so I honestly didn't think it would make it past the first year. And boy do those 4/6 pucks love to kill the flywheel. Had to buy a new friction plate for the flywheel.
