Accidental downshift @2 high a speed, clutch grinding noise now?

I wasnt paying enough attention today. I was going about 120MPH on the speedometer (about 105MPH road speed, smaller diameter tires than stock)
I had it revved to around 6k when I was going to shift into 5th I accidentally put the shifter in 3rd and started to let the clutch out when this... maybe 40-60db loud sandpapery noise came from within the housing.. followed by a pungent clutch smell. i never fully engaged into 3rd gear, next to impossible at the speed.

when the car is in gear and driving the noise is not present, presuming the clutch is fully engaged and locked
when i am riding the clutch into gear, not too far into the pedal does this sandpapery clutch grinding noise start until its engaged, every time theres the pungent clutch smell of course.

does this mean i bent some doo-dad inside of there and its rubbing against the clutch while engaging it?

my question is, how long do yall think i have to drive on it? im deploying to Balad Iraq next month, afterwards buying this S5 ive wanted...
the current clutch is 17,000 miles old

will adjusting the clutch remedy or band-aid this? im looking for a good two month band-aid. more the better though. currently the clutch engages about 2 inches from the top of the petal.

oh yeah, when idling and out of gear with the petal all the way up.. the noise slowly starts, about half as quiet as during a clutch engagement.

or you could fix it and not have to worry about it lasting 2 months.

2 cents

Call me crazy, but that sounds like the best solution

Yeah I am new, but also you asked for ideas in regards to what to do, riding around on a sketchy clutch is a great way to end up walking. I'm not trying to be an ***... By the way, I wanted to say best of luck to you in Iraq, and I hope you make it back quickly and safely.

new or not, he's right.

if you want to half *** your ride go ahead, but it will leave you stranded before 2 months is up. Personally, I love my car too much to do that. Parts car? Oh joy, you'll have extra parts for when your new one breaks.

when meaning 100k? the FC im buying has a whole 60,000 miles- same as what the FC i currently own had 3 years ago... between 60k-100k nothing broke. im not going to pull the tranny and do all this expensive maintenance on my 'half-*** ride' when all i need it for is another 2 months or so of driving, after that im parting all the parts in it that i dont need out to the forum. except the busted tranny
im not too worried there bud. i know how to take care of my cars.

bottlecap i didnt mean to call ya out and i wasnt purposely disrespecting or anything- i was really upset a few hours ago as you can probably imagine so my apologies. oh and thank you for the regards! it should not be that bad a deployment really, just hot.

wise words: **** happens

you never know when something will break, sorry to burst your bubble, but just because you had luck with this one doesn't mean you will with the next.

Didn't your transmission synchros let you know that you were totally screwing up? I heard an old story about a stupid shift sending an RX-7 into a tail-spin by mistakenly down shifting at high speed. My tranny won't let me do stupid sh@$ without a complaint - I would figure you screwed up more than your clutch or pressure plate. would it help to add a personal insult? Drain your tranny lube & check for metal shavings.... Anyone want to calculate how high the drive train had to revv up to at 120 mph in 3rd gear?!? I'm not sure it's possible. Are U just trying to get attention?

heh no im not trying to get attention.
ive actually done it twice. when i first got the car and it was my first 5-speed almost 4 years ago the shifter bushings were bad, i threw it into third at high speed- that time i remember i engaged the clutch.. the engine revved to what sounded like well over the maxed out tachometer. so no my synchros didnt tell me.
this time i accidentally shifted into third i never got near fully engaging the gear. after driving it a little bit i ended up stopping on a hill- had to hulkamania powerslam it into first gear.. im thinking my synchros crappity crapped out.. whats still strange is the sandpaper noise. its got to just be some loose tooth somewhere on the clutch or a metal shaving lodged into the plate?

dollars for doughnuts i know now that this is not going to last very long. i am sending it to Jose's Rotary next week for a new tranny, he has got a million of em just lying around.
thanks for the advice gentlemen

If I was you I would solve the problem on your clutch ASAP, or after you get back from Iraq, but I never heard of this problem before.

You'd be lucky if the transmission itself is alright.
At minimum, the clutch disc is goners.
You cannot really confirm this until you get the transmission removed from the engine...

Why don't you try taking off the inspection plate and seeing what is wrong?

it's a small plate on the bottom side of the bell housing. take it off and look inside with a flashlight.

BTW, never heard of the 508 Hardcore, local gang?

If you have a TII you'll have an inspection plate. The N/A transmissions don't have one.

They do, it's under the intake on the bell housing.

Nice place to put an inspection plate....

You can pull the starter instead, but it may not give you as good of a view.

I'm glad there are people that are driving around at over 100 and not paying attention.

Were you on a cellphone? Doing your makeup? Christ.

Anyways, I would honestly just drop the trans and have a look. You can have the transmission on the ground in less than an hour, guaranteed.

Its worlth it to do it right the first time. Drop the tranny and check it out. You can get a stock clutch kit for about 130$. It shouldn't take but about three hours to do the whole thing and it will be done for when you get back. I know that when I was deployed I would have been pissed if I had to come back and fix a car.
