While pulling my old grey carpet to put in new black carpet it got stuck on the gas pedal and pulled it. Before I realized it the carpet had tugged on it pretty hard, I retracted and got it around the pedal but the aftermath is saddening. It seems I've screwed something up. There is now TONS of play in the pedal, like if I press the pedal in and let go it bounces/flops back out and is wobbly (only forward and back, not side to side). I was looking at the accelerator linkage and noticed a hexagon shaped metal piece that is stuck on a position of the linkage. After pulling the linkage through the firewall (after detaching from the pedal) and taking it off completely to inspect it appears as if this may belong inside the plastic piece that clamps into the firewall but I'm not sure. If it was in that plastic piece it would pull the linkage back a little further and the pedal would stop sooner, it seems. Anyone know if this is true or can verify this? Is there a way to adjust the play in the gas pedal? I couldn't find anything in the FSM.
I hope I don't have to replace the accerlator linkage, but it's looking like I might. Any help appreciated.

Update... Linkage seems to be perfectly fine, got some pictures from someone showing how theirs, that is in normal condition and worked fine, looks just like mine. No clue whats wrong then. I looked in the FSM for gas pedal play adjustment and only was able to find one thing under "Fuel and Emissions Control (Non-Turbo)" page 4A-59, I'll try that but it doesn't seem like it's going to be the problem.

Ok.. Figured it out on my own, thought I'd finish this thread in case anyone ever ends up searching for this.
The bracket got bent a bit so I took the pedal assembly out to bend it back. Once out and taken apart I figured out that the spring thing for the pedal had gotten pulled so much it had unwound a bit. By taking it apart, putting it back together, and then tightening the spring one turn it was golden. Pedal was a lot tighter, reinstalled it and all the play was gone.

I removed my throttle pedal assembly & bent the main bar so it sits higher.
Then I bent the pedal face to sit more virtical.
The object was to improve the accuracy of double pedal down shifts.
