Unhappy Accelerated rx-7 need help!!!

I own a 1988 GXL and right now its too accelerated. when i start it it stays at about 2500 rpm. if we mess with the timing and drop it down to 1000 rpm the motor struggles to stay on and the rpm bounces from 1000 to 1500 . need help on what could be the problem . Pics of a good running engine of a 88' rx7 would help!!! thanx!!!

You are referring to the cold start assist. To prevent the car from starting at 2500-3000 rpm start the car in first gear while holding in the clutch for about 20 seconds. You can shift it back to neutral. The cold start assist is not a good thing on your car.

Does your car still struggle after it is warmed up or only when you messed with the timing during warm up?

Remember to use the search function at the top right hand corner... some people may not be so kind when asking questions that can easily be answered by searching or reading the FAQs at the top of the page.

That's normal. The accelerated warm-up system is just part of the emission controls, and warms up the cats quickly. The speed the engine revs to can be reduced by disabling/removing the AWS solenoid.

Besides trying to fix something that's supposed to happen, you shouldn't adjust the timing when the engine's cold. Set it as per Mazda's instructions.

Go to www.fc3s.org or www.iluvmyrx7.com and download the factory service manual in PDF format for free. You only have to download the chapters you need. The EFI chapter will show you where everything on the engine goes (like the AWS solenoid) and the Engine Electrical chapter has the correct procedure for checking and setting the timing. A Haynes manual is very helpful also.
