yeah talked with an rx7 guru and mentioned the spark plugs thing. he said it would cause a big loss of power, especially down low but then not as much up high in the rpms.
besides my buddies FC i have seen one other FC who someone had put the wires on backwards as well...i hope this isn't a common problem. i can just see some crappo maintenance place that has no idea what they are doing hooking up the wires backwards and if the engine fires up they leave it like that and the owner is left with a shitty running engine.

Spark plugs? Air filter? BULLSHIT! The problem is definitely with your tranny.
There are a few things you need to know:
1. Your transmission loves a second gear start. I don't know why they were programmed this way, but they are. First gear is a big no-no for some reason.
2. Check the vacuum line that goes from the transmission to the intake manifold. If this vacuum line is clogged, of which it commonly is, your transmission will run like **** and eventually die.
My recommendation would be a 5 speed swap. The autmatic transmissions that were put into these cars were sourced from a third party company that really doesn't know much about quality, and the cars are terribly slow.
I used to be an advocate for the automatic transmission, as you can tell by my username, but the more I learned about my autobox, the more of a piece of dog **** it turned out to be. I learned the manual shifting technique (yes, your trans is a manumatic), I learned to use the hold/OD button, but in the end I rewarded with failure after failure. By the time I was done with my efforts, my car could not move under its own power.
The only untested solution I found to the problems our transmission has is a rebuild/performance shifting kit by Bryco/Transgo. I still have the kit that I purchased. It is supposed to firm up the shifts real nice, eliminate the second gear start, and all of the wear caused by the transmission's shoddy design and tuning. I never had the opportunity to try it out, and I could care less at this point.
Do the swap.

1987: thanks for the... urm... emphasis/rephrasing of my question. Seems there was an answer after all.
x2: Why exactly would you buy an rx7 like that before you know what the problem is or if its going to be worth fixing? just wondering...
also, could you give me some numbers, like 0-60 time? just wondering...
then maybe we would understand just how 'slow' your car really is.

it may be slow in the 1/4th but off the line and for a short bit it dont seam like it, but itll take almost anything just for a short bit, either that or im a good driver.
also on the highway theres no problems or shouldnt be, just problems getting to 60mph really after that i dont know but i think its about the same as a 5spd cause its in top gear usualy.
