? about keys for FC RX-7
OK bare with me...
I bought my 1987 RX-7 with no keys. That's right the seller lost them. So today I went with proof of ownership of course to the Mazda dealer to get keys made by the VIN number. No problem. I asked if it was just 1 key for ignition, doors & trunk and they said yes. I come home and try to lock/unlock the door but I get nothing. Just goes in that's about it. I try the ignition, same thing. I try the other door, same thing. I try the trunk and to my SURPRISE it unlocked it and popped open. WTF?!?! Was I suppose to get 2 keys? One for the trunk and one for the doors/ignition? If not, then could someone had changed out the key cylinders at one time but not the trunk? I don't know what to do now.

Sounds like someone changed out all the lock cylinders. Youre best bet now would be to buy another full set with key. I *think* mazdatrix sells full sets, but you could also get them from someone parting out a car alot cheaper.

it doesn't make sense how the keys unlock the hatch. why would someone change them all out and not the hatch? so it is true that only one key is used for the whole car? how hard is it to change out the key cylinders in the doors and ignition? Couldn't I get a locksmith to just change the ones I have in there to match the keys I have for the trunk? This is beginning to a big headache. Great.. my first headache of owning a RX-7. I'm sure there will be more.

hey
the same thing happened to me i bought an 88 gxl and it had different doors and **** also the owner didn't have keys. So i did the same thing you did and went to mazda and the same **** only the trunk and ignition worked. So i recoded my door locks by removing the cylinders and recoding them. Its easy and takes a few mins plus you can clean then up and lubricate them with a dry lubricant at the same time.

Heh, its not all that bad if your car wasn't abused by previous owners, mine has been abused like a redheaded stepchild X 10 by my previous owner.

i got a quote today from a locksmith to come make a key to match what's already in the doors/ignition. $45 service call & $35 to make 1 key to match and hopefully works in the doors. that could have been the money that bought my driver's seat that i need. any comments?
