I sure the hell wasn't the slowest car there, and I did a lot better than most of the 'sports' cars people claimed to have had. And it's quite ammusing to pull up behind a viper in a family sedan and wave at him behind the start gate. You obviously knew nothing of what you were talking about, because if you did you'd know they don't do 360's very well, and they tend to push more than get tail happy. And it's funny, the Impalas did damn near as good as most vettes did in autocross back in '96. Oh, did I mention they do some pretty powerslides too?

The only reason the SS might do bad on an Auto-X course would be the length and width of it. My mid-sized nissan seemed kinda crammed in there. Plus the wheel base on the SS isn't very cone friendly either. The only thing is in transistions left to right, you can feel the weight.

The impala SS will NOT keep up to a stock rx-7 in the twisties, and no matter how much suspension was thrown at it it probably still wouldn't. But, for a tank, it's an incredible machine. Don't expect it to handle like a 2500lb 2 seater and you'd have a great time with it.
Stock 1/4 is 14.5 ... that's about what a good stock TII would run. And remember, they've got LS1s, which means more HP is NOT a problem. They're the ultimate american sedan, and that's not really a bad thing. Probably comparable to a 740i, allthough not as refined.

A while ago I was looking to buy a car and saw this beautiful, black SS on a used car lot. I went over there to scope it and despite learning that it's price was too high for me, asked if i could test drive it. I was pleasantly suprised when the salesman said, "Sure. Take it for a while, but just be back by 5:00". That meant I had an hour and a half with this sweet car! It was meticulously maintained and if I weren't a poor college student, I woulda plunked down the cash for it right there. So anyway, I go to this big industrial area to "see what she'll do". It was a Sunday so it was empty and not only were the parking lots huge and empty, but freshly paved too. So, I get out in the middle and think to myself, "This is gonna feel like a slingshot". I romped on the gas pedal and...nothing happens. The engine was revving like hell, but I wasn't moving. I thought the tranny must be malfunctioning or something until I looked at the rear-view mirror. What did I see? Plumes of billowing, white smoke from the spinning tires! I was like "Holy ****!" and let off the gas. The power of that thing was amazing! I decided not to abuse it the rest of the test and just gave it a few quick stabs from the light and ran some corners at speed. It was quite a bit tighter than I though it would be, but was definitely more cushy than my RX-7. Of course, it was designed for a different driving style. Overall, I'd say it's a great car and from what I understand they have some real soupability.

i raced a heavely mod'ed 90's impala SS on a road course in a older altima that had new kuhmo tires and some street springs and shocks. Im not saying the altima was good at anything, but i wasnt even close to him in the corners. and he weighed about 2x more then the altima. This guy even had a 6 speed in the SS....
