Some books state there were convertibles that were officially 1992 models in the U.S., but these are just left over 1991 models.
The FD3S (3G) was released as a 1992 model in Japan.
Confused yet?

well if they stopped making the fc in 7/91 and started the fd in 12/91, i would say that they did make 92's. they just called them 93's in the us.

And technically there were a small batch of FD made in 12/91. You will occasionally see a few of the Japanese model kits say 91 efini RX7 and be a kit for a 92 model year Japanese FD (which is the same as our 93 model year).
here is Mazda's offical information from the Mazda Japan history of the RX-7 website:

Yes, there is a 92 model out there. Yes, it is in the continental US. Yes, it is locked up very tight and has been seen only by a select few. I don't know if it is still there or not, but on one of my many trips to the Mazda training facility in north Jersey, I was escorted into a locked storage room which contained a single 1992 model with an "N" in the 10th digit of the vin as proof. It was a white FC body that I am assuming was being used for training purposes only but, who knows? Maybe one day we'll all get to see it.
