91 convertible

i posted a reply about this in another topic but nobody replied so i figured i'd start my own topic. i thinking about buying a 91 convertible but was wondering what ya'll thought. the guy wants 5500 but it's negotible. runs and looks great. but under full throttle it has a vibration. i put the car on a lift and noticed it has a good size oil leak and a transmission leak. couldn't tell where they were coming from. so do ya'll think its worth it or should i save my money.

no, if it has those problems, def not. If it were mint, low milage stock, id consider it, or if it had a turbo swap, id consider, but not as is. I got mine for under $2000 (S4) needing just a little bit of work.

A vibration under throttle while in gear or in neutral. If it does it in neutral, then the motor has some issues. If it does it in drive, then i'd check out your drivetrain. Either way, 5500 is too much. I'd pay 3k at the most for what your describing, assuming the motor was in good running order.

Use what you found as price knock downs if you really want the car. Also look up Kelly Blue Book, NADA, and Edmunds comparable values and use them as judgements on what the car may actually be worth. I am sure you will be surprised what you find. Keep in mind that if the car is totaled and fully insured, you will only recoup what the vehicle is worth, not what you may have paid for it.

You did not post mileage or body/interior condition, or the appearance of the top or mods if any. The condition of the top is important. They can be rather expensive to replace.

The vibration you mentioned could be anything from alignment to wheel bearing to mounts, to tire balance to drive shaft to etc, etc, etc. Oil and tranny leaks could be a major job and expensive.

Based on the flaws you have identified the car is not worth anything close to the asking price. An essentially perfect low mileage 91 vert might command 5K but that would be an extreme high exception. I picked up an esssentially perfect 90 vert with 47,000 and a recent rebuilt for $4,200 three summers ago.

Also ask yourself if you are knowledgable or confortable working on roraties. It is a 16 year old car and these puppies can be tempermental and costly to maintain depending on the maintenance and TLC given my god knows how many prior owners.

All that said, if you want a rotary I'd continue to search elsewhere. If you only want a vert your choices, if you have 5 thou to spend, will be huge.

$5500 is way too much to be having any kind of leaks at all. For that price the thing should be well under 100K and absolutely perfect. Tell him he's off his f-ing rocker and you'll give him 2000 for it.

thanks guys that's exactly what i was thinking. i figured i might take it either to the dealer or a specialist just to see what it needs and how much it would cost. the top and interior are in great shape the body has one or two dings nothing big. before i even consider it i'd have to go get it checked out. thanks
