89' Misfiring, please HELP!

Alright I've owned an 85 carbed for a long tiem and I just bought my 89' non turbo 5 days ago and it has massive problems.

When I was driving it back from san diego the car would die alot, maybe 50-100 times total driving back. It was weird too becuase the engine was still moving, jsut not sparking. So all the fuel was dumped out the exhaust and backfiring. What I would do was turn the key all the way back and then start the car again wiuth the clutch in while still moving to get the car going again. The engine light is on and the tachometer doen't work veyr often. I took it down to checkpoint here in sac (rotary only shop) and the guy ran the codes and said it was engine misfire but he wasnt sure what needed to be replaced. He said the trailing coil pack would need replacing since thats what runs the tachometer (as soon as the tach goes out the engine light comes on). He also said maybe a while new wire harness and ECU and wire harness thats under the dash.

I went and bought a 90' traling coil back and installed it but it does the exact same thing. When I first start the car the tach will work and there will be no engine light. THe car though runs excessivley shitty. You can here it sputter and misfire horribly. Then after about 5minutes of driving the tach will go out and the engine light comes on and the car runs moderately well. After a bit mroe driving it when it's prone to its random dying and not sparking while driving. I also went and smogged the car here and it failed 6 times over the legal limit. 118 is the max hyrdocarbons in california and the car had 594.

i was thinkign of getting the ECU next, and then the wire harness. I'm not sure what's exactly wrong with it and I'm lost. I have never had this problem with my 85 hence it being carbed and never saw this problem with my vr4. any help would greatly be appreciated.

I would say the first thing to do is to check the codes. This may guide you to the trouble spot.
