89 GTUs (any ideas)
Hey. i have an 1989 GTUs. the water pump went out. it sat as i waited the parts to get in. i spent 450$ on these parts "from Japan" my boy and i changed out the upper/lower radiator hoses, thermistat, and the water pump obvioiusly. put everything back together except we left the smog pump out. its blowing white smoke out of the exhaust. as well as the leak right past the caddy converter.
what is the problem?
any ideas???

Alright, some of us are missing the main point here.
If you're blowing white smoke and smells sweet like burnt coolant, you've probably lost a coolant seal between the housings. This happens when a rotary is overheated, which could have been caused when the water pump gave out.
Compression check the engine (ask if needed - check FAQ and archives, Aaron Cake's site, etc.). Then go from there. If compression is fine, but it smells like raw fuel, it's because the air pump isn't providing the oxygen for part of the cat to do its reaction.
BTW, as said, the S5's use the air pump for VDI and 6PI, as well as Secondary Air Injection.

low impendance. my main manc. ordered from mazda which they orderd from japan. the reason being. they last LONGER. while you go spend 100 -200. and replace it alot sooner ill just spend the money for a great one. btw japan is alot more advanced expecially when the car is japanese. if that makes sence.

Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
Wondering why he left the air pump out...
Don't work on the car if you are going too bust it further.
And the parts from Japan are the same parts you can get in the states... so not sure why you wasted money on shipping charges from Japan for common off the shelf things like a water pump or thermostat or even the hoses... which every mazda dealer stocks or can get within 48 hours... parts that were made in Japan for Mazda to import to the states.
