I did search this, some pilgrim asked the exact same question some time ago but got no replies.
Can it be done? I imagine it would have to go in the trunk, not under the spare wheel cover.

Yes. There is a half-moon shaped area at the very back of the car (inside the trunk). I believe it's a leftover from the hardtop's spare tire storage. I found batteries that are long and narrow and that will fit in that space.
