Question 88 vert, 105 mph top speed. Rebuild?

The car still runs smooth, but I think it should have more power. I'm wondering if I should rebuild it while it's still relatively healthy. How fast does a vert go with a strong stock n/a engine? I know the verts are a little heavier.

the best thing to do would be take a compression test, once you see the results you will know for sure.

Your aux intake port valve actuators may be stuck in the closed position.

ShureShot as always beat me to it.....

WITH THE CAR COLD.... reach down and try to move the actuators... they should push DOWN to open.. (if you do this at idle, without burning yourself, the car should idle higher) I've seen a LOT of them stuck shut because the 86-88's are exhaust operated and feed through the manifold.. if you have a free flow exhuaust on it, might not be enough pressure.. if the gaaskets where the actuators mount to the manifold leak, they won't open either (89-91 cars are fed via vac lines directly to the actuator, much less likely to fail.. but i've seen the brass bushings for the transfer rod through the manifold lock up as well).

I put some grease on the shaft of that actuator, and could see that it had gone to fully open. It rubbed all the grease off. It revs up fine, I think I could get a higher top end in 4th gear than in 5th. It just seems like it might be a little tired. I probably will do a compression test on it. I was just curious to see if there were any vert owners that had tested theirs with a fresh motor.

mine has 88k on it and i have topped it out at 120. completely bone stock. but this is michigan so there is probably like a 50* temp difference giving me some more power.

Left out some needed info. Does it have the stock exhaust? If so could have partially clogged cats. If it idles fine and makes Hp thru the gears but runs out of steam at top end, Do a fuel pressure test also. rx7doctor

Silly question... were you doing this in 5th or 4th gear?

5th gear on the NAs runs out somewhere around 110-115mph just due to lack of power.

4th should wind up through redline, and if it's not, as posted above, check your various intake actuators (6th ports, on yours).

... and, actually, you don't need working 6th ports to get it up to 120-125 on a NA. "Or so I hear."
