87 na gas gauge problem

The gauge on my wifes car is wacky.Jumps from 1/4 to 1/2 a tank all the time. She got scared and went to put gas in it and it only took 6 bucks to fill it up.Is there a way to check it or fix it?

Float in the tank is probably busted or loose, or the baffles in the tank have rusted out.

You'll want to check out the sender and see

I replaced mine recently (within the last month). Mazda sells them for about $75, and it took me about 30 mins to put in. That's similar to what mine was doing, except mine would just jump from 3/4 to 0.

My gauge wil read fine when I fill up. But after it gets passed the 3/4 mark it drops all the way to E. So I have to go by the Gas light and or miles. How do I check to see if its the sender? Is it covered in the Haynes book? This seems to be a pretty normal problem, so has anyone done a write up about it? I wanna fix this today or tomorrow, I am trying to sell the car.

ok i think my gas guage is messed up. i had a flooding problem last week and i finally got that fixed. so taday i decided to start the car (its really cold outside, wanted to see how it did in cold weather) it started hard at first but i expected that. it starts up to the 3k warm up speed then after 4 or so minutes it just shuts off doesnt sputter or anything it just dies. so i take the plugs out thinking it may be flooded agian and they are dry. the gas guage says half a tank but its said that for the last 4 months (its been at my parents house while ive been away at college) i let it run for 45 minutes the other day after i got it unflooded. and after the gauge still said half a tank. i check the tank and i cant tell if there is any gas or not so we get some anyway just in case. and i just tried and it does the same thing before. whats wrong with it? did it just run out of gas and my gauge is broke? if so how do i test my punp and make sure everything else is working?

If it has been really cold (under 32F) and the car was sitting for a while, it is possible that you have water in the tank, which can freeze and block fuel lines.
