5 speed transmission survey, need input.

I'm interested in determining what percentage of you guys have (now or in the past) problems with 5 speed transmissions. This can be anything from the neutral "whirring" common to every 5speed ive seen that wasnt rebuilt, to weak/grinding synchros when shifting hard/fast, to rattling at idle or at speed, all the way to missing gears.

IF you have, or have had, multiple cars/transmissions, post here a good idea of how many and what was wrong with each. Approximate mileage would be useful too. I know there are many of you out there with very good 5 speed transmissions, but I know there are vastly more that have at least one of the symptoms listed above.

I'm mainly interested in NA trannies, but turbo guys can post too, as they have many of the same problems despite their added strength.

IF any of you guys drove/still drive their transmissions with these problems, I'm especially interested to hear about it. Such as a local friend who had a trans in his 88 GTU that sounded like it had rocks in the box, that he drove for several months before he ever replaced it, or the other local guy who drove on a similar sounding one until all gears but 4th went out all at once.

My brother had a problem getting into gear while sitting still. If it wouldn't go into first, he had to leave it in neutral, let off the clutch, then try over again til it went. I think that was more the pressure plate or something. No other problems when driving. I vote grinding syncro since it made the same sound.

mine makes a very quiet wirring noise when in neutral with the clutch out, but if i had the interior together even with the windows down I wouldn't be able to hear it.

Had an 86 gxl with whirring and would jump upon release of the clutch. I think the problem was worn input shaft bearing. Drove it for 4+ years w/o failure. My 88 vert has the whirring noise but no other problem. New throw out bearing didnt cure the noise so I guess that's also internal bearings.

I've got an '89 Vert with 172K miles on it...I had the synchro problem...only seemed to happen on the shift to 3rd...then again, I never was gentle with my shifting...not as harsh as one of my friends, but definitely not gentle...

several cars - pilot bearing and throw out bearing have been main issues.

I've got the tranny whirring from my '87 N/A, probably could use a fluid change however, also rather hard to shift into 2nd & 1st coming to a stop. My TII tranny has issues with hard to get into gears, just refuses (no grinding/etc) especially after coming to a stop.

my '68 sport when sitting still, makes a "whirling noise" when you let the clutch out......push it in it slows and stops.........makes a "tingle" the rocks inside noise when you depress the accelerator........*but very quiet*

and as of lately......if been having trouble getting in reverse only happened twice though..........maybe it will just go away
doubt it

I had the whirring noise and worn syncros but they hadn't started grinding. Noise was worse when cold seemed to appear around 140,000 miles. I rebuilt it at 150,000 and put in all new bearings and dressed the sycro rings (thickness was within spec). Works great now.

Sometimes my 2 to 3 shift feels notchy and in the summer especially, if I don't double clutch and match revs when I downshit to third it will sometimes grind or if I try to shift too fast at high RPM into third especially in the summer. It actually isn't as bad as it used to be since I've had synthetic(Mobil1) in the gearbox.I almost don't notice it very much now.Oh its an '89 GTUs with 186,OOOmi on the clock.I also know one of the previous owners had some work done by the dealer on third gear but I don't know what was done.

I had a whirrling noise but that has vastly gone down when the input bearing was replaced with the rebuilt.

Oh, and second gear was kinda hard to get into when the engine was cold and some of the shifts felt notchy. This has all gone down vastly though when I added redline tranny oil.

I've had them all before I got the T2. All of my N/A 5 speeds have had syncro problems in 1-3 gears. One tranny would clunk into 2nd and 3rd. Sometimes it wouldn't go into second at all. 3rd gear had 2 different places it went into. When it was in gear it was quiet as could be. Also 4th and 5th gears were like new. I drove it for like 4 months. never got worse. I pulled it out when I traded the car. I still have that tranny.

Had the whirring noise in my 86 N/A but it would come and go, not predictable. Full clutch jobs never took care of the issue either.

the only thing i found wrong with my tranny is that i have to be going pretty slow to get it into first or it will grind really bad but i dont hear any noises from mine at idle

common whirring noise, accompanied by the chirping of the pilot bearing when the pedal is all the way out. No other shifting probs not attributable to my bushings eating themselves out after 130grand mi

whiring noise when clutch is out.......downshift to frst hard....and when high rev it is hard to get into 2nd....i have to shift into second before i can get it into fist or reverse....double clutching takes care of the synchro problem for second gear....havent tried it for first yet....

My 86 GXL has 215,000 on the transmission/rear end the differential is still ok, i do get a slight bearing whine on 5th gear while cruising... also while downshifting i get a bearing whine while downshifting into 2nd, other than that she's fine. The clutch has around 5k on it, driveshaft was replaced by previous owner, all trans/diff mounts were replaced by me... I could use a rebuild, but it's not terrible yet... again not bad for 215k

I wish there was an option on your survey for "noisy in first, third, and fifth" or "noisy in second and fourth" . . I can't remember which of those two that my tranny did but it was only noisy with the shifter either forward or back.

On my TII its tough to go into gear. 3rd gear grinds ever so slightly, just enough were I sometimes have to rev match. I can shift out of first, but I have to be going REAL slow or at a dead stop to go back to first. Second is just hard to get into sometimes (but no grinding). 4th, 5th, and reverse I have no problems so far. :knocks on wood: Oh, this is a 90 TII with about 160K. Its my daily driver.

these are prety much the exact problems i have. i cant even get it into first while she's rolling without double clutching with the rpm up to like 3.5k (goons in hondas look at me like i'm taunting them to race when i'm realy just trying to get into gear. what would they know about driving technique and double clutching anyway?) i also have recently developed the synchro grinding trying to shift quickly into 2nd at high rpm. the last time i changed the trany fluid i think i put in 80/120 weight instead of the recomended 75/80, could this be causing some of my problems?

outside of those few problems the trany shifts very nicely while cruising--solidly sniks into each gear with no grinding or ratling.
