This has been covered many times. Check your grounds and your secondaries. Also check the FAQ!

I'm fairly new to the RX-7 myself, so I don't know about the sound you heard. As for the grounds, make sure they are all clean (corrosion/dirt whatever).

How would you describe the noise? Was the cat glowing after pushing it hard? If so the cat is probably clogged and causing enormous back pressure.

Do a compression check. I'll bet dollars to dougnuts you blew an apex seal. Was the sound kinda like a big pop or "pap" sound? If so that's an apex seal kicking the bucket.....happened to me off a stoplight one day... car wouldn't go over 60 after that, I did a compression test, then called mazdatrix and got a rebuilt. DO a compression test..
