it's easy to covert 2 seater to 4 if you want. the storage bins come right out and the bolt holes for the seatbelts/seats are right there.
however if you want to do this you should search b/c this comes up more than a little bit.

I swapped my GXL from the bins to seats because we have been trying for children and at the time it was the only car I had.
Now I ahve a nice company car, but left them in because I use them alot more then I did the bins. It's nice being able to put my laptop bag or things I buy from the store and not have them slide all over. They also will help hide my rear strut bar when I get around to putting one in.

well i tore the interior out of my car to find these "lock boxes"... but i thought it was odd because the only way to get to them was to tear up the carpet... and they had wood lids.. so it really seemed akward to me.. are they all like that? or are mine special?

lol then mine are CRAZY. they had wood as lids, with a cutout for a hand, and they were screwed shut. also, to get to them, i had to pull my carpet out. hahaha. any idea why this is? do i have some model that's trim options didnt include either seats or storage bins? or was this done by the last owner? its the stock carpet and has never been pulled up... so im confused.

Sounds like a ghetto rig to me. I guess the P/O had a base and wanted storage bins or something.
As for the rears, they seat small children (less than 6 or 7) and amputees. They are similar to the ones in my dad's Austin-Healey, and I could barely cram back there when I was 7. You could also sit sideways if you must have someone back there.
Now if you want rare, my cousin used to have a 1st gen with rear seats.

my 87 TII came with the bins, but i swapped them out for the rear seats. Backpacks go into the backseats much more easily than those damn bins. I had to move the amp though, it was in the storage bin. And now I dont know where im gonna put the battery when i relocate it :-\
