um KiyoKix I think i know what I'm talking about and i know aerodynamics play a PART in top obtainable speed but so dose gearing. and that what was being talked about. your shift points will be changed to 34,58,84,117,158 is the speed at redline an trust me you will probably be able to hit that. but for normal cruising your rpms will be 2400rpm at 40 in 4th and 2800rpm at 61mph and 3210 at 70mph so it will change your gas mileage but if you don't care then go for it.

Haha, do you realize how tall 2.78 gears are? A stock T2 with a 2.78 rear would probably run 17s The higher the number, the lower the gearing, the lower the number, the taller the gearing. My advise would be to find whoever told you this and smack them

Sorry about my first post, what meant to say is that if you go from a 3.90 to a 4.30 then your top speed will go down.

Quote:
All 1988 'verts have the 3.909 differential. The 89 and up depends on auto (3.909) or manual (4.10) to determine the differential gearing. And you aren't going to hit 150 mph in a vert without serious mods... although the gear limited speed with the 3.909 diff approaches 200 mph, there is no way you'll get there with an NA 13B.

I wasn't saying that I could go 150mph, I was simply saying that the final drive in my vert is useless because I would never drive that fast even if I could.

Back to the original question, how hard is it to put in a 4.30 final drive? Is it as simple as swapping the ring and pinion gear, or are there special tools needed to do this?

If you get the right gear set it should not be hard, you will want to take it some where so they can set the lash.
