255/40-17 on the rear?
this is on an 8 inch wide rim. on the front i will be putting 235/40's on. i know it's not for an NA, but i don't care..
i don't think the front will be much of a problem, but the rears some guy (can't use the search right now) put 265's on...

Well the ones I was referring to were the cobra rims, my bad. Anyways, I'd be completely sure. But with the rears, you shouldn't have a problem. The fronts are what I'd worry about.

yeah, i wanted as much tire as possible without rubbing in the front. that's why i want the 40 series instead of 45.
Ryde, you sound like you're in the hunt for some cobra rims

Why would you want to do that and waste your money? Is it just about looks? The tire is unnecessarily wide, and it's just added weight for an NA to push around. A 255 is not recommended on an 8" rim, and it'll look like old hot rod rear fat tires, which does nothing for cornering as the sidewalls will squirm under load.

ted, i've seen it done before.. not on our cars though and it doesn't look out of place. it looks great. like i said above i don't care about the added weight. i was thinking of going 245 in the first place so why would it be that much of a difference going 255 instead?
i'm just so damn sick of having that HUGE gap in the rear wheel wells. it looks whimpy as hell and it's about to be gone

Every aftermarket wheel I have used on my cars wieghs far less than any stock wheel combination, even my 275/40/17 on Enkei rims wieghs far less than any of the wheels any of my rx-7's came with... There is a difference of 5 lbs between the my TII oem's and my current rears...
I also disagree that 255 is to wide for an N/a, my n/a could easily have used 255's at the dragstrip last year, and who knows, what if he goes to an N20 kit or does turbo kit, I hate buying rims and tires twice...
Ford does the 245 on the the 17x8 rears from stock, 255 is probably not that bad of fitment depending on brand, plus it would afford the rim more protection from curbs and such..
I am a fan of as much rubber as possible, with my TII on 225's I use to get wheel spin all the way through 3rd gear , with the 275's its far more driveable, no use having power if you can't put it down.. With my N/a sometimes 225's aren't enough, you have to launch n/a's pretty hard, and the wider the rear tire the better stick you get...
Sir Rupert, here are some pics for you....
Thats an n/a with 225/50/16's on 38mm offset rims

The TII is dropped about 1" in rear and about the same in front, the tires still looked good even at stock ride hieght though, IMHO the 35 mm with staggered sizing is the perfect fitment for the TII... My n/a is sitting on stock suspension, but I have a set of 1" drop springs and kyb's sitting in a box ready for it, still even with wheel gap the 38mm sits the tire out to sit flush with the fender which looks nice...Max
