Question 1st gen GSL-SE 13B into 2nd Gen body????

My friend just bought a 2nd gen body without a motor and I just happen to have an extra street port 13B motor from my GSL-SE in the garage. So the great ? is...

Will the 13B from a 1st gen GSL-SE bolt into a 2nd Gen body by just replacing the front cover and oil pan from the 2nd gen or is it more intense than that?

Thanks for any and all help.
Joe

Does the SE 13B have the holes in the intermediate plate for the right side "under" mount? I guess you could drill and tap them.....

I don't think the GSL-SE has those holes. Mazda never built the GSL-SE 13B to be used in the 2nd gen body, so that might be a problem.

it will be a problem, GSL-SE's mount in the front, but S4's have engine mounts on the int. plate

I have an SE engine torn down, somewhere in the shop. I'll see if I can find the intemediate plate, but that would be my 1st question too.

Thanks guys.
That is why I posted the question, I wasn't sure if the inter. housing had that mounting point on an SE motor. My thought is that when Mazda first went to the 2nd gen body that they didn't really re-engineer the motor as the 84-85 were basically the starting point for the 86 and up motors. But I turn to you guys with the knowledge I don't have to help me out.
Thanks again

You also can't swap the 2nd gen center iron because the water o-ring grooves are in the wrong spot. The GSL-SE has them in the rotor housings, the 2nd gens have them in the irons.

It's not a straightforward swap. You would need to either fabricate a mount off the GSL-SE front cover, or drill and tap the GSL-SE center plate.

Sell the GSL-SE motor and get an S4 13B. Then swap that motor in.

Thanks fella's....
I was hoping to get him up and running right away since I have an extra motor but the fab work will have to be his decision to make.
Where would he have to drill and tap???
Thanks

Drill and tap an iron/plate? ICK! I'd make custom engine mounts for the FC before I did that...

WTF you on crack? S4 motors are not as durable as GSL-SE engines, which have 2 piece 3mm thick apex seals, where as S4's have 3piece 2mm thick apex seals that break off if there is stuck on carbon

thats why there are a ton more blown S4's than GSl-SE's

Best idea by far. A bunch of extra work to fit an inferior engine just doesn't make sense to me.

Hi, I am actually in this exact same process...blew another s4 engine, and the only one I have left is a gsl-se. Here is what you gotta do to put it in. Physically, the engine fits perfectly without having to swap the oil pan or housings. The left side engine mount bolts up EXACTLY the same as stock, so use the stock bracket on that side. But, on the right side, there is a 4 bolt mount in the int housing that has 7/16-20 threads (dont ask me why its not metric, but a chevy harmonic balancer bolt threads in perfectly.) You will have to fab an engine mount for that side. I believe that a cosmo right side engine mount is compatible, but im not entirely sure. I dont wanna spend $90 on one to find out it doesnt fit, so I'm making my own. I've already made a paper mock up, all I gotta do is trace it to metal and weld it up. I would be happy to send you the pattern if you want it. I would use the s4 pickup instead of the gsl-se distributor. I am also using the s4 manifold so I can retain the stock computer. You have to attach a little piece of aluminum angle to the bottom of the manifold to cover up a port in the int housing to do that. Those are the only 3 things you gotta do to swap the gsl-se short block into your s4. If it wasnt so damn cold right now, my motor would already be in the car.

S4 NAs are slow enough already (I've owned 2), why go to all that trouble to install a less powerful engine?

What was the stock HP for an N/A motor from a second gen???? I thought they came with like 145 which isn't a great improvement for such a heavy car.
I know the SE came with 135Hp and the one I have is already streetported.

aescalapius... If you have any pics could you send them to me.
Thanks
Joe

I see more 200k+ GSL-SE engines than I do S4 engines, and there are WAY more S4's out there than GSL-SE's. But, fact is.. you WILL be putting a less powerful engine into a heavier car. As long as your friend is okay with that.. I say go for it...

GSL-SE -- 2500 lbs
S4 Sport -- 2625 lbs

Not a big difference in power or weight, but the GSL-SE engine is still an inferior design.
