Question 1990 RX7 Wont start properly.

Car will start with one hand on the MAF or spraying liquid fire in the maf.

New MAF put in.
New fuel pump.
Gas siphoned and new gas put in.
Car has been sitting for 1yr-2yrs.

We looked for a vacuum leak, but didn't find any.
Cleaned the injectors

But still the car wont stay started for a long time before it stalls

Quick video of the process which we have to do to start it.

Post what we should check.

Jumper the fuel check connector. Disconnect the fuel return hose (rubber part of the line) and place it in a jug and w/the check connector jumpered turn the key to on and see if the fuel fills the jug or not.

Cleaning the injectors usually means on this forum ........................to remove the injectors and give them to a shop that cleans fuel injectors ultrasonically (sp?) and then reinstalling them.

I'd do what Satch said above. Remove the return fuel hose on the left of the engine. Install a hose on the hard line coming from the engine and put it's end in a container. Them jumper the fuel pump check connector and then put the key to just ON. Fuel should FLOW out the hose into the bucket. That at least would prove the pump is working good and the fuel filter is not stopped up.

Personally I don't put much stock in sending fuel injectors out to be cleaned to fix a problem like this.

A good question I have is: if you jumper the fuel pump check connector and put the key to On. do you hear the fuel pump run continuously or not? When you push the cone in the afm aft as shown in the video, that push back of the cone makes the pump run. Same thing would happen if the fuel pump check connector was jumpered.

The spray we used is Gunk brand Liquid Fire. We cleaned the injectors by tapping off the **** that was on them and rinsing them in good fuel. And jumpering the fuel pump does make it run the whole time.

Are you working on the car in question in the top of this post or what? Bit confused by the different names.

That's not cleaning the injectors.

And by "jumpering the fuel pump does not make it run the whole time." mean that you are jumping the fuel check connector while the car is running or that with the car off, but key to "on", jumping the yellow fuel pump check connector next to the passenger side shock tower results in the fuel pump not always running?

Not so sure about the jumpering part, I watched one of my other friends try it. While the car was off, he jumped the fuel pump connector and it worked, but it doesn't seem to want to work without being jumped. (I'm still kind of new to this, sorry if I'm a bit vague on the details) but yes, this is my car that we are talking about, this is just a friend of mine helping me out.

The fuel pump will only work w/the engine not running if the check connector is jumpered or the AFM door flapper is opened to a degree. while the key is to on. Now if your problem is a different issue such as the engine will only start if the check connector is jumpered then one of the possibilties is the ECU on the S5 is not sending the proper "ground" signal to the Circuit Opening relay which is one of the items that plays a role in the fuel pump receiving power to turn on. So which of the above most closely resembles your predicament?

Is it possible, *if* the AFM I bought was also broken, is it posible that getting a new one would get it running?

Hahaha, I can't seem to find the bulletin, can anyone send a link? And what would need to be checked with the gasket?

I had a similar issue. Car sat for like 7 years, so I pulled the tank, replaced the fuel filter, replaced the plugs/cables, replaced the pump, and it turned out to be the AFM. After I fixed the AFM, it would stay running.. not very well but non the less.

Do you have another RX7 to try your new AFM on?
