1986 Rx7 n/a to turbo engine swap
I've got worn out apex seals on my current engine that has 180k miles on it, and its time to replace it. I bought the car for $250 and the interior and exterior are in great shape, brakes too, so I don't want to just sell it to buy an actual turbo 2nd gen rx7. I cant find anyone ( at least on the internet ) that is selling the turbo 2nd gen engines. Should I just hit up a junk yard and get one for cheap and strip the junkyard car of the computer/wiring harness, too? Someone posted a site for me to read up on the swap but I forgot what the address was and didn't save it in my favorites. I've got a clean mustang coupe that I just got done fixing up, and now I would like to have a really cool fun to drive turbo car that can pull the turns well. I was thinking about doing one of the 302/T5 swaps, but that would just kill the weight ratio. Any help and advice is appreciated. I'm thinking if I get junkyard parts, about $1,000 for the swap.

Also, rx7.com/rotary performance is right up the street from me. What all could I get them to do to rebuild the junk yard engine so it'll last a far amount of mileages, or can I just do the work myself? What about rotor milling? Thanks in advance for all the information!

if you can find a junkyard TII then get everything that works. chances are the engine wont. Buy a Jspec or rebuild the engine. Check out this site, it helped me get everything ready for the swap. http://hypntyz.rx7life.com/tech.htm

Can I find the interior/computer parts elsewhere then a junk yard? I want the wiring harness and stock guage cluster ( even though the boost guage I hear isnt all that accurate ). I would like it to look as stock as possible.

you cant hook up the stock boost gauge w/out swapping the entire dash wiring harness. I doubt its worth it to you. As for where to find the parts, there are people on here that are parting out TIIs every day. Look in the for sale section. I got pretty much all the parts (ecu, harness, fuel pump, throttle cable, knock control, boost sensor) for like 200$

The 302 wont "kill" the weight ratio. It will "affect" the weight ratio, but the car will still handle like an RX7. The 302 is a relatively light motor. Do some comparisons between a 302 with a T-5 and a 13bt and the TII tranny. You will be suprised.

My advise to you would be to try and get a junked TII. Is your N/A 4 lug? Anyways, just replace all of the good TII parts, to the NA. With the money you are going to spend, you could probably buy a TII. I guess you will save money on insurance swapping the parts to the NA though. There are places that sell J spec TII engines, but they are inconsisten in quality. So what are you going to put the 302/t5 in???
Why don't you toss it into a starlet!

I'll stick to keeping motors in cars they belong in, at least in the mean time. I think buying a f'ed up t2 might be a viable alternative IF I cant find one at the junkyard. Will see what happends

When your saying that your swapping out the harness anyways, I believe your talking about the engine bay harness. You have to actually swap the one in the dash behind the steering wheel. It will be a hell of a job if you do do it.

Nope, I'm refering to the one behind the dash
Some examples of my fine fine work
I had to replace a ton of **** behind the dash once, evap core, heater core, seal **** up etc. . .

just do a search in google.com I did and found nippin, Ranja, midwest, and a bunch of other places that import jspecs. www.fc3s.org sells them also and I have heard nothing but good things about them. I did the t2 conversion on my car, don't forget to swap the rear end, I have the NA stuff in there but I don't drag race or launch hard so it's not a worry. when it goes I'll replace it with the t2 parts. if you want to keep the NA rear, and half shafts you need to get an automatic driveshaft and have it shortend, it cost me about $75. the NA one will not plug into the Turbo trans.
