Is 180K miles alot for a 87 rx-7? HELP
What up,
I found a rx-7 "non turbo" 5 speed around my way for $900 w/ 180,000 miles on it...Is this alot of miles for a rotary engine? I'v heard that if u treat it right it can last to 300K miles?!?! I really like this car and is interrested in it but i dont wanna get into something thats gonna just give me problems! So i know this is the best place to ask questions!
my car i own now is a 96 sentra and it's a dog
WHAT SHOULD I DO

yeah buddy, thats alot of miles for any car. there may be mystical NA rotaries out there that reach 300k miles...but i think those are extreme cases. maybe get a compression test to see what kinda shape the engine is in.
edit: also, with 180k miles on it, there's no way you can expect it to be a trouble free car, even if the engine is fine. it's had a very full life. you may have shot bushings and mounts (motor, trans, diff), dead springs and shocks...a billion creaks and squeaks, and things just waiting to crap out after youve had it a month .
a car with 180k miles isn't a car to get and hope its worry free.

I wasnt expecting it to be totally a trouble free car, i can deal with replacing minor things here and there. like as u can see it really needs a paint job lol but thats minor stuff i can take care of! My current car has 120K on it so i'm trying to descide if i should keep this car or go for the rx-7.
BTW: thanks alot for the fast reply!
keep the advice flowin
i also forgot to add the car is fully powered and has a moonroof

That was very well written by Bingoboy. If your have mechanical ability, take the car for a spin. Check all your normal items, but also the Fc's are notorious for worn syncros in the trans, so shift and listen for any noise/grinding, wiper switch defective, headlight switch problems, excessive smoke on start up, small amount normal, and exhaust system (can be very expensive). Compression test would prove effective for that moment, but in theory, the seals could go at any time.
Check coolant level and condition. If coolant seals gone, water can dissapear into the engine.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

Honestly I dont think it would be wise to buy this as your only car. Maybe a project to build up or restore, but definetaly not a daily driver. You dont know how its been driven, maintained, and there WILL be things breaking withing the weeks after you buy it. Call me pesimistic, but I'd expect the engine to go any time.
My friend's '86 NA crapped out at 190K and it was religiously maintained, but did see its abuse on the road course.

my car has 173k when i got it. drove for 2 years no problem. original engine. i hit 200k and the clutch went. soon after oil control rings. ran fine up to about 208k than just would always flood and give me trouble. so i rebuilt her. housings were in great shape. so i rebuilt her. 5k down the road, no problems and thats where we are now.
