13b N/A almost overheated. Worried.
It's been hot here in California these days around 90 degrees. This afternoon around 6pm, I came to a complete stop at a traffic light in idle and waited for about a minute. Noticed my temp gauge needle started rising up from the center area, but it never reached max. I wanted to turn off the car right there, but at the same time I'm also the first car while there's a long line behind me (I was driving near the arena; Sacramento Kings vs Phoenix Spurs game). So in a desperate attempt in case the light turns green, I placed it into 1st gear while waiting and my temp gauge started to drop back to center.
I just did a coolant flush and added fresh coolant the other week. First time seeing it like this and I'm getting worried since Summer weather is here. I don't have AC due to needing freon and my heater only works when the car is warmed up. My logicon is on cool and wasn't turned on.

The only way the temp drops is by airflow- either the vehicle is moving or the fan is pulling air, but just dropping into first gear shouldn't make any difference.

Yes, please.
I just don't know how to respond anymore to threads that describe temp issues with needle position on the dial face...it's bloody useless information.
The stock S5 water temp gauge will sit halfway (where your brain will read "NORMAL") for @ 170-220°...your temp could be varying all over the place and the needle will never move.
You NEED numbers to correspond to needle position or you are getting no data at all.
The S4 gauge is reputedly more linear but still has no actual numbers to work with. If you collated the stock S4 gauge needle position with a second "real" temp gauge, you might have a general idea of what's going on but still not as good as a properly calibrated gauge.
Guages without a scale are deceptive devices.
The original 240Z had an oil pressure gauge with no scale, just a tick mark at the bottom, top and center of the needle sweep.
A brand new, perfect engine displayed the oil pressure below the center mark, people always thought their brand new cars had low oil pressure. Datsun's "fix" was to eliminate the center mark on the gauge in later cars so you had nothing to compare against and early cars replaced the sending unit with one from another model that moved the needle up to center on the gauge.
In neither case was the actual oil pressure changed, just how it was displayed.
The mind is a weird thing.

i have the stock fan that came with the s5. it was just weird how i placed it into 1st gear at the traffic light and it started cooling down back to center-ish. like everyone said and from my research, the cluster temp gauge isn't accurate. i just wanna be sure that i'll be fine driving it for awhile. is there any thing else i can do to keep the car cool besides what i did already like coolant flush? upgrade the fan to a taurus' fan?
