12's?
Hey Iam new to the rotary thing and am thinking of buying an 87 13B motor RX-7.
What kind of mod's would it take to get it to the low 13's /high 12's in the 1/4 mile. Also how much would i expect to pay to do this.
Thanks

To get to low 13's high 12's id say the major things your going to need is:
A TII, 3" open exaust all the way back, fuel cut defensor, Fuel controller or stand alone ECU, larger injectors, larger fuel pump, an FMIC, All accesories taken off the engine, power pulleys, and less weight.
The key is which turbo you go with. At the very least if you had to stay stock youd wanna start with a series 5 (89-91 rx7's) turbo and focus on how much fuel your getting in there.
Oh and as far as money is concerned id say 5k would get you there, if you know the right places to get this stuff.

Let me direct your attention to the upper right hand portion of your screen. There you will find the answer to all your questions prayers and curiousity . Search, Search, Search. There are hundreds of modifications that can be made to these cars. First step is to get a full tune-up and to get the car running at least stock. For high 12's and low 13's you are better off getting yourself a nice TII and starting there. Going turbo on N/a's is kind of not as cost effective as starting with what you will end up with for half the cost. For those numbers though I would go with all the things listed in my post below. "Doing it right. What do you guys think?" Those are the mods that will need to be done most likely. That and the biggest aid in a 1/4 mile time will be driver experience and skill. That can add or subtract whole seconds.
Quick List:
Engine Management System
Free-up the Intake/Exhaust
Front Mount Intercooler
Fuel upgrades: injectors pump etc.
Clutch
after-market Radiator
Drag Radials (optional)
E-Fan
Battery Relocation (to free up some space)
Upgraded Turbo
Nice new Flywheel
these are just some of many things people do to these cars.
There are many ways to cheat and get a 13 second '7 but you better be ready to ride the bus in the near future. Do it right the first time and you will thank yourself in the end.
I would definitely do a full tune-up first though and get all your other bugs worked out. Compression test the motor and see if a rebuild is going to be necessary.

Yup thats KEY and thats to have a good foundation to start from and that means making sure you have a well running Rx7 before you go all out and make it a Rotary Rocket

600-1500 FMIC
100 Battery Relocation Kit
200-450 new Injectors
300-1000 Exhaust
100-250 Intake
800-2000 EMS (skip the SAFC if you are going for these numbers)
0-1800 if rebuild is necessary
80-140 full tune up
200-500 Aftermarket Rad
700-1400 Turbo
20 Oil Change
150-500 Clutch
180-300 E-Fan
200-400 Guages
3480 --- 9860$
This is just off the top of my head, and this is if you are doing all of the labor yourself this is just for parts basically.

Guys with less expensive set-ups I know it can be done so please don't flame me! There are plenty of ways to get lower numbers if you can be a DIY fanatic, find competitive prices etc., but just buying stuff off the internet I think these are some pretty realistic figures.

WHAT?!?!
These are some of the biggest crackpot answers I have ever heard!
I bagged 13.4 at 3000 ft above sea level, with TMIC, Stock ECU with an SAFC, an S5 turbo, and exhaust. And I could have been faster if I opted to speed shift..
Ask the people that have the slips, not the keyboard racers...
Mod list (so people dont bitch):
K2RD Rad
E-Fan
680 primaries, 720 secondaries
SAFC
3 inch Thunderfab DP/MP
RB catback
FCD
S5 Turbo
Stock motor (not ported)
A cheap *** $30 pair of junkyard rear radials (street)
Read it and weep..

thats what im saying u don't need half of that stuff to go 13s i gotten my car in the 11s on a remapped ecu and a upgrade turbo with a front mount and 850cc with msd. all my friends running a s5 turbo with full exchausst are in the low 13s on a stock ecu with no safc and 720 secondaries, one of the 7s we have is running a 13.60 on stock everything but exchaust and fcd don't ask me why because i warned him and he doesn't care he says thats how they do it from the south. so it is possiable to go 13s cheap

Hey buddy get off my nuts . Ive got an 87 GN and a 87 GXL. After driving the buick for a while I gave up making the Rx7 fast. Got any mods done to your GN?

Laying Down Rotary Law
I ran 13.5 in my old Turbo GXL on plain street tires
you can search for a post I had "worlds fastest least mod'd FC"
stock IC
stock Injectors
stock FP
stock fuel lines
stock fuel rails
stock ECU
stock S4 turbo 10PSI
stock TID/AFM
stock BOV
no wieght reduction other then no A/C
The only real external mod I had was a 3" exhuast
I'm sure If I could of pegged a 1.8-1.7 60' foot
with some drag radials I might of run low 13's to high
12's
for a N/A:
have the motor street ported
get a Jay-Tech Holly manifold
get a FPR
Holly 600 double pumper
ACT clutch
Sniper N.O.S kit 75 shot
Drag Radials
should have no problems running 12's

You basically have upgraded your fuel system, cooling system and exaust system and your in the low 13 second category. So what would it take to get a little more below that? Upgrading the IC, perhaps more fuel and ugrading your turbo... I am incorrect in my assumption???
