10AE, continuously floods...fuel pump ghetto'ed...

Okay...I just picked up a 10ae but it's got a couple problems. I'm researching this too, but I'm looking for good leads. I want to have as much info packed under me as I can get before I get jump into the middle of it.


Okay...according to the story...the engine/turbo was replaced in this car and it had about 3000 miles on the assembly. The guy goes to work, when he goes to leave the car wouldn't start. Turned out there was very weak and intermittent power going to the pump. They tried running a live wire to the pump just to test how she'd work and the car continuously floods.

Now, of course the ghetto'ed pump wiring will be the first thing tackled. But I want to know if I should take anything else into consideration?

Ideas?

change the oil and maybe flush an extra quart through.

Mine had flooding problems before I got it and it still had hot start floods after I got it. Not to mention it smelled like gas. All I've done is change the oil flushing some extra through and I cleaned out the intercooler and I no longer have hotstart floods.

The two main causes of flooding are leaky injectors and low compression. Both should be checked.

Note that the fuel pump nornally only receives ~9V when idling and cruising. It only gets full battery voltage during cranking and under load.

So if it's getting 12+ volts while idling or normal driving (the way he had it wired, it would) would that cause problems? I'm not sure how a fuel pump works...if it gets varying voltages to control fuel flow or if it's just on/off and the flow is regulated by the FPR only...

It won't cause problems as such, but it'll be running needlessly rich. Fuel consumption will be higher for zero gains.

The pump itself is nothing special. The fuel pump's supplied voltage is controlled by switching a large dropping resistor in and out of the circuit. Lower voltage to the pump means less flow and pressure from the pump.

The FPR is only there to keep the difference between fuel pressure and manifold pressure constant. Nothing else.

How do I check to see if the injectors are leaky?

There's a procedure in the FSM, but personally I wouldn't bother. Just remove them and have them professionally cleaned. If they are leaking, they won't be any more. If they aren't leaking, you'll still have removed 16 years of build-up that can have a noticeable effect on how well the engine runs.

Okay, talking to him he says that the car, when it initially started giving him problems, had blown a fuse. He said he drove it to work perfectly fine, then when he went to go home the car wouldn't start. Turned out to be the main fuse. He swapped it and then had this problem (at the time believed to be something to do with the fuel system).

I'm trying to get him to get a comp guage and check the engine tomorrow...
