Question ***Help! My 7 Keeps Dying!!!***

Hey guys,

I'm having a little bit of a problem, and am really stumped... I have an 87 Sport, engine is stock, the only mods that have been done are suspension...

So it started about a week ago when I was driving on the freeway, the engine died as I was driving. So, I just pushed the clutch in and started the engine again and everything seemed fine. Then the next morning I went to the car to go to work and the battery was completely dead, when I turned the key, absolutely nothing happened. So I got a jump and headed out, I stopped at a light and let the car idle for a bit then the engine died as I was sitting at the light. I got another jump and made it to work (I didn't let the engine idle). I made it back home without a problem and to work the next day.

On my way back though, the engine died while I was on the freeway again, all my power aslo died with the engine, Headlights, Int. Lights, etc. cut out. The wierd part was that when the engine died, the Tach rocketed to 8k, and the redline buzzer went off, even though nothing else had power.

I tried to start the car, but once again when I turned the key nothing happened, not even a click. So I just popped the clutch in 5th and it started up. I made it home and as I pulled up to the curb, the engine died again and all the power died at the same time again (with the tach rocketing to 8k and the buzzer going off).

The next morning when I was jumping it, I had connected the Negative cable to my source battery, when I connected the Negative cable to my battery the headlights suddenly went down (they were previously stuck up after the power died) this made me think maybe there was a problem with the grounds.

As I was driving to work on the freeway, the engine died AGIAN. Again all the power was gone, the tach shot up to 8k and the redline buzzer went off.... I tried to start the car, to no avail. I put it in gear and popped the clutch and got it to start. As I pulled up to work the car died again in the same manner. I pushed into a parking spot and left it for the day.

While I was at work I checked the grounds I could see, the one at the driver shock tower, the one at the coil, a few other places. Unfortunately I didn't have my tools with me so I wasn't able to clean them at all. I found one ground from the Tranny bellhousing to the firewall that was disconnected, and reconnected it. I got a jump and made it back home without a problem.

The next day the battery was dead so I push started the car, it started fine. As I was driving the car would hesitate and the tach would shoot up in accord with the hesitation. This happened 2-3 times as I drove. I got about 2 blocks down the road and I had to stop for a car, and the engine/power died again with the same tach rev-out. I push started it again and the engine stayed alive for about 3-5 seconds and then died. The car had power suprisingly, and I turned on my Emergency Lights. I tried to start the car with the key, but nothing happened and it sucked away the last of the power. I gave up and pushed it into a parking spot and left it.

So this is where I'm at now. Any advice would be great!

I wanna say your alternator isn't recharging your Battery. Are all your idiot cluster lights on? If so that means the Alt. is bad/dying.

The only time I had a similar issue was when I installed my SAFC in my old TII and one of the ground wires came off the harness.

good luck and go get the battery system checked at Kragens/checkers and recheck your grounds.

have your alternator tested and check your grounds...

I'll definitely get that done and post the results. Any idea's on the wierd Tach movements/Redline Buzzer? Could it be a ramification of a bad Alternator?

no idea about the buzzer and the 8K tach.
