$ of switching auto to manual trans?
Unfortunately I have an auto trans and it's starting to show signs of needing a rebuild soon. I was wondering if anyone who swapped an auto out for a manual could give me an idea of the cost compared to getting a rebuild? Thanks

cheaper to swap a 5speed, buy all the parts used.
flywheel, driveshaft, clutch kit (get new) transmission slave/master cylinders pedal assembly and shifter, you should be set after that.
The most expensive part when i did the swap, was the short shifter, which was 190 bucks.

You can generally get a driveshaft/tranny/pedals/clutch/etc for about $500, if someone's selling it all together. Generally I'd just get the clutch pedals, a brand new master/slave & hoses for the hydraulics, and get a tranny/driveshaft together, then buy an OEM clutch kit, and you're pretty much all set. Generally it's around $500-$1000, depending upon where you source the parts, and what you buy new.

I got mine from a friend. When you do your swap, make sure you have the correct Y-bracket for the year of transmission you have. The 86-88 Y-brackets mount to the tranny with a different bolt pattern than the 89-91s. Also, you will need to buy/make the brackets for the crossmember. The 5spd tranny is shorter, so the crossmember will be too far forward to mount to the car in the proper place. There are instructions floating around the forum somewhere for how to make your own. I read the instructions, drew it on a piece of paper and went to a machine shop and he cut them out and drilled the holes for $20 parts and labor. Then I welded them together the way they needed to go and spray painted them with a couple coats of paint so they wouldn't rust up from being exposed to everything. If you PM me your email address, I can email you the instructions.
