So. We spent this weekend pulling out the engine for the rebuild. This was my first engine pull and tuscanidream's first rx-7 pull. We had lots of fun (and some frustration) doing it, and learned a lot.

Well, here's whats been going on with Melissa's car: The Bad

Steve tore apart the keg. He found that it had extremely low miles since the last rebuild. There was no endplay and the engine was not clearanced. I did not understand what he exactly meant until I looked at the irons. The engine was so tight that the corner seals wore in a deep "racetrack". The original story we got was what I believe to be proven B.S. The porting on irons was also too large.

One housing had a scrape taken out of it along the edge. The other one was in good shape.

So here's the damage list:
All irons are junk.
One housing is junk.
All the seals are junk.
One rotor bearing was showing slight wear.

Well, here's whats been going on with Melissa's car: The Good

Irons were sourced from Mr Japan2La. My experience with him was more than positive. He gave me his personal phone number so I could talk with him (I was nervous as I wanted to be positive I was getting a good product). There was a misunderstanding and my product got sent to another purchasing customer... So he called me right away and sent me a freshly lapped set (which he was asking twice the price for) at the same price. He had no problem shipping it to Steve's house instead of my own as well.

Here is the new build component list:
Mazdatrix lapped irons
2 new rotor housings
2 new rotor bearings
RA Super Seals
All other seals replaced

I wanted this engine to last her a long time, so everything was replaced with all new replacements. All ports were kept stock on purpose. She will be running Idemitsu synthetic and premix (+omp). Might be costly, but I see it as protecting a costly investment.

I just have to order her gaskets and then we will have everything needed to put her engine back in.

In the mean time, I applied I <3 Rotary stickers to both our cars. I can't wait to send my engine off to Steve once Melissa's is back in. I can't do both at the same time.
