Understandable since most people don't know that the USA didn't get the t1. Hell, half the people on this forum don't even know that there was a t1.

Highly unlikely. So your saying since he confused my FC for an FD, it's understandable that he thought a LHD FC could be a RHD JDM turbo FB? Not to sound like a dick but I honestly don't see the logic in that

Or, he said "That's a turbo one, right?" As in, "That's a turbo car/rx7/version, right?"

First day on the road, getting gas and showing my buddy who works at the gas station my car and I get two people talking to me
"dude, your car is sick"
"Thanks!"
"Is that the turbo?"
"Unfortunately, no"
"So it's got the V6?"
"No, it's a rotary engine"
"Oh, it's sick, dude"

Also brought my car to the car shows we have every Sunday and had a few people take a look at my car, even though there was 100+ cars including GTR's and tuned Evo's, Sti's etc. I was very happy.

Yesterday I went to my buddies house to pick him up... he happens to live next door to his uncle who was emptying the garbage when I pulled into the driveway behind my friend's Rx7.

"Oh you guys both have Datsuns?"
"Uhh"

lol. I didn't bother speaking much, I kinda just mumbled and smiled and nodded then walked away... more so on the account that his uncle is a 1st generation Filipino with a very thick accent.

RX7-inspired conversation gone horribly wrong. When special ordering spark plugs at the Autozone parts counter.
Parts guy: Oh RX7, cool! You do any drifting?
Me: Nah, I actually like my car. (sarcastically)
PG: That's cool. My buddies and I go drifting right out here on xxxx blvd. (It's a straight, 6-lane road connecting two major freeways.) Great for e-brake drifting. I can get my Integ full sideways and just power out of it.
Me: So, uh, when are those spark plugs going to be here?

I got to enjoy explaining to the lady at the dmv the reason I put "0" in the box where it asks for # of cylinders in the vehicle you are registering. Her mind = blown!

^ yup. they always change my 0 (one time I tried putting 2 and explaining I had 2 rotors) to a 4. it doesn't really matter. I do always say "you guys should be more open minded and add a rotor option there". sometimes I get laughs, other times I get glares and told to move along.lol

also, some guy was trying to buy my car (it looks like junk so I guess he assumed I would sell it?idk) and he was like "ya, I've always wanted to do one of these up. you got the spoon engine in that?". I tilted my head down shaking it and then said " its a rotory engine dude, no cylinders. rotors. you don't deserve to own this thing, you wouldn't understand it and put in a v8 more then likely. its a common, albeit blasfamous, swap.". then drove away after he spouted some nonsense about how all cars had cylinders. lol

btw, guy had that 'I know everything but actually nothing" d-bag kinda aura going on, why I was semi rude. guy just seemed dumb and sketchy.

When my brother had his jdm t2, he used to get "Nice skyline!" and "Hey is that a skyline? I thought we couldn't get those here!" whenever he'd pick me up from the club I worked at downtown (they were almost always drunk people commenting... except the time my co worker asked if it was a skyline, all because it was white -_-)

He also used to get flagged down as a cabby a lot... Never understood that one at all... Car was really loud, low and had an aggressive front end. Not to mention NO TAXI SIGN ANYWHERE!

Smh... people.

Couple days ago at night I was sitting at a red light and an oldsmobile pulls up next to me trying to get my attention... I look and the two occupants (looked like Dad and Son) were smiling and giving me huge thumbs up. I found out I had blown a huge fireball downshifting for the light lol.

Shortly after I got my car, I was at Harbor Freight from some tools or something for my bike, and an employee followed me out;

Him, "Oh wow! Is that an RX7?!"
Me, "Yes."
Him, "Oh man! I got to ride in one around Laguna Seca. Can I hear it?!"
Me, "Sure, but it's just stock." *start up car*
Him, "My friends are never gonna believe this."
Me, "Huh? It's just a car."
Him, "But it has one of those sideways engines."
Me, "....Do what? You mean a boxer engine, like a Porsche or a Subaru? No it doesn't. It's got a rotary."
Him, "Yeah, 4 pistons stacked like a square, going sideways."
Me, *wide eyed*
Him, "That's awesome!!" *walks off*
Me, "Oh. My. Gawd."

Another time, at work;
Him, "It's modified?"
Me, "Yes. A large streetport" (this is after I rebuilt the engine, with a pineapple large streetport)
Him, "So....what's that?"
Me, "Earlier port opening, later closing, more port area."
Him, "So you cammed it."
Me, "No, ported it."
Him, "Cammed it."
Me, "No, it has no cams."
Him, "What pushes the valves?"
Me, "There are no valves."
Him, "...and it probably doesn't have pistons either."
Me, "Umm...no, it's a rotary."

"Nice Porsche!!"

Him, "Is that a 2 or 3?"
Me, "It's a RX-7."
Him, "I know that. Does it have 2 or 3 hamster wheels in it?"

Best one to date...at a stoplight...
Him, "Nice car! How's it run?"
Me, "Great!"
Him, "It looks better with the wing on it."
Me, "Do wha?"
Him, "I'm the guy that sold it to you."
Me, *lol*
I paid $400 for the car, because "it needs apex seals". I babied it around the corner, switched the trailing coil wires, and drove the hell out of it for another 2 years before coolant had it's way and I rebuilt it.

Hahaha those are awesome. Love the conversation with the guy from your work.

Tonight was actually quite the contrary for me! Went to the usual muscle car cruise in I always go to on Friday nights and I latex out my painted intakes and some Atkins business cards and my regions SCCA cards and blah blah. Well I actually had a lot of attention tonight and had people coming up left and right talking about how they used to race and how awesome the rx7 was and how unique the engine note was and all this other stuff. It actually restored my faith in humanity.

well a couple of months ago, i went to the parts store to get spark plugs and i brought the old ones to show the kid, so heres how it goes...

me: hey i need these spark plugs for my rx7 (shows him the plugs)
kid: ok whoa wait? we dont carry those kind of plugs.
me: what do mean? i bought these plugs here before.
kid: is it for a lawnmower?
me: no its for a rx7 its got a rotary engine.
kid: oh those. you sure thats the right plug? it looks like it wouldn't work.
me: i took them out of the motor, they're the right ones, put the part # in.
kid: oh they're they are.
me: yea....

cant blame the kid, it was his 1st time working there but it was the last time i saw him there....

Every time I go to this one gas station, the clerk asks, "if I'm still rotary, cause those engines are prone to failure if mistreated." Every time I say yes and tell him the story about my swap and how it's still rotary and I'm familiar with the issues they yield. We have a good conversation. Today, his buddy looked me dead in the eye and said, "Man, I love that rotary. Nissan really hit it on the head there, even though they need upkeep."

I just stood with my $3.00 in hand with my mouth ajar, chuckled, paid and left. I died a little inside.

Last summer I pulled into the driveway after getting home from work, and ran straight up to the bathroom because it was going to be a serious photo-finish, if you know what I mean. There were landscapers working at my neighbors house and I guess they brought their kids to work because the children were hanging around the driveway (there is a gate leading from the neighbor backyard onto my driveway).

Through the bathroom window that overlooks the driveway I could hear the kids talking about the car excitedly, until the adults stepped in. I only heard bits and pieces of the conversation but I heard phrases like

"That thing has a lawnmower engine"
"My truck would run right over that"
"It's like a lawnmower"
"It's a weed whacker"
...something...something..."junk unreliable"...somethign...something

They were very fixated on yard equipment, which I guess makes sense based on their occupation.

Anyway I finish up and then head outside to grab all my work stuff from the car, which I had left there in my haste to evacuate my bowels.

The kids were milling about and started asking questions when they realized it was my car. You know, kid stuff. "What is it?", "How fast does it go?", etc. We're having a conversation and I open up the hood and by that time the adults have wandered over.

Silence when the hood is opened.

I start up the car, give it some revs to spool the turbo. The kids love it. Finally the adults start asking a few questions.

"Is that a 4 cylinder?" (funny, I thought it was a lawnmower)
"What year is it?"

And as I'm talking, I run down a bit as to what modifications have been done and then drop the bomb casually "It makes just over 400 wheel HP on the daily low boost setting, just a little North of 500 wheel HP on the high boost setting".

Nothin' from the peanut gallery.

"Yeah, runs mid 12s on street tires without trying, pulls in 5th gear like most cars pull in 1st gear. Right around 2600 LBs you know. Goes sideways in every gear. Daily driven."

"Anyway I have to go inside and and get some food happening, but not bad for a lawnmower, eh?"

No real response. So I say "bye" to the kids and go inside. My kitchen window also overlooks the driveway and as soon as I'm inside, I hear:

"I wouldn't drive no lawnmower like that"

Sigh. At least the kids haven't been ruined yet.

Ive gotten "is that a porsche?" "Nice supra" "i used to have a trans am too" and recently a small convo with a kid who has a old but super clean MR2.

Him- Nice car, what is that?
Me- Its a rx7....mazda.
Him- O, i thought it was a 240sx, so you drift a lot?
Me- Haha no, i hate those cars and drifting is played out. I just drive her.
Him- Well you know why this stopped making those motors right? (i thought it was strange he thought it was a 240 then proceeded to say i have a unreliable motor)
Me- Yeah pretty much i know why.
Him- Those motors were unreliable and no one can fix them.
Me- No, it came down to emissions and fuel economy. Trust me, its reliable and very easy to work on.
He pretty much had nothing else to say so i left.

In the few years of daily driving my fc im pretty glad i havent had a lot of stupid convos. Better you just keep them guessing.

^ I've gotten similar responses from people too lol.

Another one:
The other day I was at a gas station filling up... an older (mid 40s probably) Asian dude who was filling his Toyota up approaches me and asks me what kind of gas mileage I get..
Me: 22 or so
Dude: Wow! That's pretty good!
Me: Well actually yes, it is pretty good!
Dude: Yeah cuz my father had one of these and he never got gas mileage like that.
Me: Ohhhh yeah so you know about these cars?
Dude: Yeah they have that wankel engine, very interesting engines, just not the best on gas

We then proceeded to talk about Rx7s and how cool he thought his dads car was

^ It's nice to hear stories like that. I was at NTB recently and as I told him I have an FC and need track tires. He started telling me how he is putting a 13B-RE in his miata and that he is looking for parts etc etc.

I also had a small race at a light with a MK3 supra one night, pull into Pepboys a few days later and see he's in the employee parking section. Left a note saying I was the RX7 he ran against the other night and that we have car meets right down the road on Wednesday nights. So he calls me, he shows up and says wow I was surprised you pulled on me blah blah blah. It's RWD right? Do you drift? At that point I was shaking my head (in my mind!). Apparently he likes to go behind the local mall late at night and drift. Funny how people like to waste rubber and buy new tires, but cant afford to fix their oil leaks and rusted quarter panels..

Honestly mine has been pretty positive - but I do try to avoid the younger generation, hang out with people who actually know cars.

Cars n Coffee show: "nice FC." "ooo - GTU-s? they didn't make many of those!" "Clean!"

Local auto-x, over the pa: "And here comes the super-cool RX7 with the slow driver!"
