I had a similar situation. I owned a 79 RX7 with a small sp. My condo association complained about the noise the car made while I parked it. Got a new exhaust and I still got complaints. The car was only used on my days off. Well one day while I was at work the condo association had my car towed for being an eye sore

If they really wanted a reason to complain you would of been doing a brake-stand bouncing off the rev limiter.

I can't stand miserable people who try to destroy everyone's happiness.

the best part is our parking garage is on a lower level so it sealed off from the rest of the building.

Loud exhaust, old ladies, warm up...

Wow. Lots of crazy stuff going on here... Allow me to give my experience on this.

Car: 1988 GXL, rebuilt N/A engine with turbo rotor housings (no N/A exhaust port inserts.) Otherwise, stock engine. Factory exhaust manifold, straight single exhaust (2.25" at manifold, increases after two feet to 2.5"), NO crush bends, one straight through muffler at the rear... Friggin' loud.

I have one neighbor who lives 2 doors down that complains (rightfully so, I have an exhaust system that is way too loud)

She told me one day: "That little car is pretty loud... When are you going to get a new exhaust put on it?" I said: "As soon as I can afford it." End of conversation.

She is in the same age bracket as the OP's neighbor.

She is right, my car is too loud. I'm preparing for a new exhaust system. End of that problem.

Next problem: Warm up. Ask 5 different people, you'll get 5 different answers. Here's my experience with not warming up the car.

One day in January of 2009, I was driving my GXL between my Votech school and my High School. It was approximately 10-20 degrees Fahrenheit outside. I was in a hurry. I started the engine, and let it 'warm up' for 5 minutes with me sitting in the driver's seat. At that time, the engine had about 170k miles on it, and the car was up to date on all it's maintenance. I took the car out on the highway, and drove it conservatively until I saw it register on the temp gauge getting above "C". (maybe 120 degrees, the heater was warm by then.)

I got up to 80 MPH, and started to feel the car buck. BAD. I backed out of the gas. Went a few more miles, and she started bucking again when I got above 5,000rpm. ****. Next thing I knew the engine was running on one rotor, with me holding the gas pedal to keep it running. Bad apex seal on the rear rotor, blown engine.

What do I blame? Not enough warm up time.

Think of it this way: At 20* ambient temp, when the engine is cold, an apex seal is asked to go from 20*F to +500*F and back to 20*F while the engine is running (think of it this way, the seal has to go from the hot combustion/exhaust gasses back to the cold intake air/fuel mixture...) Factory apex seals are hard and brittle, and don't take too kindly to that kind of heat stress. Especially when they have 170k miles on them.

From what I've learned in my metallurgy class, temp extremes like that will draw hardness/toughness out of the material over time. Add a mechanical load to this material (like asking it to propel a 2,xxx pound car down the road at 35mph) and then you have thermal stress + mechanical stress. Think about it. An engine idling is an engine idling. Not much mechanical stress. An engine pulling the car = more mechanical stress.

The engine rebuild cost me a lot of money. Carbon isn't a problem for me; I take good care of my engine. Broken apex seals are a problem, once again, I've never had issues with carbon lock. as for "the manual says red-line it once a day" I've never seen that before. I do red-line my car regularly (at least twice a day), but I've never done it because somebody instructed me too.

Anybody have a picture of the "red-line it once a day" part of the Mazda manual?

i know for a fact that it was talked about in the dvd they released to owners shortly after the RX-8 had come out and people were driving hrm like old ladys and complying about problems. as far as in writing for an rx7 im not so sure but thats what some people refer too. when they make that statement,

This reminds me of the first start up of my street port swap. It had a big exhaust leak at first, and this was at 2am. 10min later a cop pulled up saying, that my friends, neighbors called saying we had been racing up and down the street. Even though my car was still on ramps and no hood. After seeing the car with factory exhaust and the fact it was imobile he said to continue when the sun was up.
Another time at my appt, me and one of my roomies with his srt4, leting our cars warm up around 7am, he worked at autozone and I was in school in the am so we did this every day. Coming back to the appt one day there was a note from the office on the door. Saying a neighbor had reported that we would let our cars run for an hour every morning. We chuckled saying man wish we had that kind of funds for premium. Being normal for notes on our door, we decided the next morrow we would continue with our richual; however, this time much more boosting noise. Few days go by and were drinking some 40s and noticed papers on our windows. It was from the office stating how they had changed the rules and each appt could only have 2 cars, there was 9 of us with 6 cars. So we had to park up the street which ment getting up earlier to walk there. The moral of this story dont **** of the naibors, quiet your car or youll be forced park elseware.

try not to **** off your neighbors as i have. luckily i didn't have bad consequences although i almost did once. the car (88gxl) had been down for a few days and finally traced down the problem and got her ready to run. the ambient air was around 42* (im in florida and it was January sometime). i was wearing my hoody. the stars were bright and the moon lighting up the sky like it was a flashlite shining on my fc. re connect the battery and slip the key into the ignition. crank her over once and loud pop from the exhaust. make a few more minor adjustments and the neighbor lady (total **** *****) comes out telling us if we try starting the car at 2:23am again that she was going to call the cops. like an immature punk i told her to **** off and attempted again to crank her up with success! she roared to life throwing a fireball out of the single exit exhaust on the passenger side. after hearing her run for a few mins i shut her off and packed up the tools and went inside. then a few moments later cops come patrolling the neighborhood and stop outside my house. one officer gets out of his squad car and feels my hood, which was cold (i usually remove the hood when working on the car, it makes things easier). he got back in his car and left while never knocking on my door.

i was a total dick about it but then again the lady that called the cops has teenage children that ride four wheelers in the middle of the night up and down our road. my other neighbor says he would rather be woken up from a good night sleep to hear us working on the cars then to see us out partying and getting into trouble. then again he was the same neighbor that said i should take the resonator back off my exhaust because he can't hear me creeping home at 3am anymore lol. great guy. his wife and kids are just as cool too though.

i have other neighbors complain at me but they are older and just hate life. i explained to them that i have mufflers and such and they leave m alone. anyhow, now that i trailed off partially.

Brian, your car looks amazing. i have a question though. what spoiler is that? it looks like the pacific auto sport rear spoiler (the optional one from the mazda dealer when bought new) but i notice a center support above the third brake light that isn't on my pacific auto spoiler?

forgive me for rambling!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update

So it was about December 15th when winter break rolled around. I left Albuquerque for Angel Fire, New Mexico where I'm a snowboard instructor. About a month later I return to ABQ and drove my car for about two days before discovering some shaft play on my turbonetics 60-1 hifi.

Car = immobilized again

Couple days later and look what I get in my mailbox!

This lady is ridiculous lol. I find the whole thing comical more than anything. I never drive down her street and revving the engine for 30 minutes? Get the fawk outta here with that.

I'm seriously thinking she's insane.
The culprit:

If you look at the last picture you can see the stop sign way back there. 4 houses to the left of that intersection is where the senile old woman lives.

That's funny. When I let the car idle for a while, folks stop to listen to the song of my people. Go BRAP in her driveway.

Since my turbo is out I'm going with a bigger wastegate (precision 46mm) and an open dump tube. Currently my wg is routed back into my downpipe.

Anywho, I'm sure she'll love the sound of that wastegate screaming haha!

And Samshizzle, you're running apexi N1 duals right? I had an apexi on my old car and I really loved the tone. Looking to get this exhaust eventually.

3rd2ndgen- I try to be as courteous as possible as well. I never drive infront of her house. Whenever possible I kill my car a few blocks up and coast downhill to my house... Got the new exhaust with a presilencer welded on and I'm always super respectful to her face. It just bums me out that she's so upset and going about the situation this way.

and Aztra, Thanks, it's a gp sports front bumper!

I say you need to go talk to her face to face. But be nice about it like you have been. Tell her this, and try and figure out what the **** her problem is; You've always tried to be a good, respectful neighbor, you know your car is louder than most and you do ^ to try and keep it as quiet around the houses as possible, stuff like that. Try and figure out what this ***** deal is. If she still keeps the **** up, i guess you'll just have to do what you've been doing and hope that all the other neighbors feel the same way as you do; That it's not as bad as she thinks it is. And when the time comes to have Jakes' car back rolling, we can all 3 cruise up and down your street and if she thinks yours is loud, she's got another thing ******* coming. Not only will my massive streetported carb'd N/A with true duals set her off but Jakes' Gigantic 4" exhaust with that snail will put her in her grave LOL.

Got **** from a cop for my car idling and cooling down after work in my garage. He tells me exhaust is illegal and asks why car is on. I tell him it needs a turbo timer and he says I am making stuff up. I explained about the hot oil turning into sludge inside a hot turbo and he says the oil cooler should be enough, and he was an ase tech for 10 years, than says I will be ticketed whenever the car was on or on the street. Needless to say my neighbors hate me. And apparently the popo

i think you've been more than nice and agreeable with her (by the way, i hope you kept your receipts). i would tell you to kick her in the mouth, but i guess you can't really do that. bummer ....

however, there comes a time when enough is enough. i had to deal with a neighbor like that many years ago when i lived in New York. pretty similar to your situation. i had a Rotary Engineering exhaust (total of 3 mufflers), i went to work for 8 o'clock, let my car run on choke for a minute or so before actually leaving my street. she complained and inisisted that i either FIX my car or park it somewhere else. i assured her nothing needed "fixing" and there was no way i was going to park anywhere other than my house.

at the same time .... it was expected that the gardeners and yard-work crews shouldn't bother me, or the fact that i had to clean up dog-**** from my lawn and even from the inside of my house (telephone repair incident) - nevermind the fact that i didn't have a dog.

life is life! we all have to deal with things we don't like at times. she needs to accept that. admittedly, i would say that even if you weren't trying to work with her, but the fact is you are trying.

Wait, he passed by on the street, went up the driveway and into your garage just because the exhaust sounded loud and the car was running?

Back from the dead. Thought I'd bump this thread cause scrapp talked to me about it on instagram. Anyways fellas, don't get on the bad side of your regular old psychotic cat lady neighbor. I got evicted...

It was some bs. Turns out the granny was bestfriends with my landlords wife! He was cool about the whole thing and even informed me and my pops that he believed she was crazy as well. She told him that me and my dad are "nothing but cholos" and that all we do is "listen to rap music" lmao.. Granted, I'm half hispanic (you couldn't tell by looking at me) and my dad is a 50 year old white guy. He was a cop working narcotics for 25 years so he's definitely not into music that places a lot of emphasis on weed and codine. My landlord told us that he knows we're good people but that he just couldn't deal with his wife bitching all the time.

It's okay though, got a new place with a much more mellow driveway that I can get my car into without scraping. Also, my new house is a lot nicer with a two car garage! Anyways, keep rotating bros.

Rob, I was in my old neighborhood the other night brapping around in the fc. I drove right in front of her house and gave her some revs. I wonder if she recognized the sound? haha

Good to hear you don't have to deal with her anymore. Sounds like a convoluted self entitled bitch anyway. I would def BRAAP BRAAP in front her house a lot.
