How did you end up getting the third degree burns?
Well apparantly whenever your coolant seals are bad enough the combustion gasses that superheat the cooling system cause it to explode off of it. I ran my red s5 until it got to the point of having to push start it because all the coolant would flood into the engine. (3years). It never blew off on me, but this one..... I pop the hood on my car because I saw the steam coming out and as I lift the hood up and go to put the hood holder up the cap exploded. My water temp gauge was about an inch or two past the BIG H. Anyways, water gushed up my arm/face. Face wasn't bad, arm looked nasty. The cap wasn't defective either, I put my s5 cap on it the next day, drove to town and about three miles down the road (temp gauge on the H) the cap blew off and I had hot water flying in my window and on the windshield.
Needless to say, I leave the hood down now... even though it doesn't do it anymore.

You know how the coolant resiovor cap isn't supposed to have pressure?

Wowww thats intense. I have never heard of that happening to anyone before, although I've never heard of someone driving a car for three years with an engine whose coolant seals had failed

These are the full ones I just posted the other day in my 88 GXL thread..
It's a 88 S4. 78k original miles. Never seen snow or rain.
You can see from the pictures, that the whole car actually still looks brand new. Right down to the original floor mats.
(besides fade to windshield wipers and mud flaps.).
I posted 2 of them in here a few pages back, but figured I'd post the rest of them here too.

^Nice! Something about a factory fresh S4...
On a less awesome note, here's one of my S4s (we don't talk about the other one):
Been laid up for over a year now with a blown engine (bought it that way). So far I have a S5 n/a engine for it and a good portion of the parts I need for the swap. Hopefully it'll be up and running by the end of summer. Blown engine aside, she's in great shape for a $500, 24-year-old car.
Here's some more random pics:
Here's what's going in:
I promise I'll have some less depressing pics soon .

I guess I can post up, as I've had a few S4's
Here's my first one. 87' base. Swapped in LSD and cleaned up. I'm so mad I got rid of those Mesh Wheels, They were old Hayashi racing 15x7 meshies. I didn't know what they were back then. And yes, the car had some horrible 17's on the back. It was highschool. They were'nt on there long.
It started out as a White california car, my brother drove it from San Diego to Virginia in 3 days, then rear ended some lady around the corner from our new house. After that he gave it to me because it was wrecked and he left for college. The car was 3 different colors for a while, then I had it painted blue.
Before paint:
After:
Yes, it also had an aftermarket glass sunroof, and suede FD seats.
After that car, I failed and bought a VW GTI. I missed my RX-7 too much and NEEDED a project car.
So I got this ROUGH 86' base for $250.
It had too much rust and the seat was falling through the floor so,
I cut it up and scrapped it with my dad's truck.
Then I scored and bought an 89' GTUS w/ a blown engine!
Only one picture, this is an S4 thread. But you can see how that is a superior car.
After I fixed that car, I bought a house and decided to take on another project.
I bought this pearl white 88' GTU with a blown engine, and a ROUGH 87' base(automatic) with a good engine. The car was **** but it ran great. I Swapped the 87 engine into the 88' GTU, scrapped the 87' and sold the 88' for engagement ring money.
Then I bought an 1991 Turbo, and have that and the GTUs currently.
I do LOVE S4's, the styling is timeless. I think they are easier. But you can beat the S5 engines.
That's my RX-7 history, full of S4's.
