so i found some brilliant black in dupli color that matches my 88 vert. i tested it out on the driver's side door handle but it still looks dull. the dupli color website said to use the dupli color clear coat and then buff it but i dont know if thats the "proper" way.
and plus actually using the handle messed up the paint so i have to strip it and recoat it sometime.
how do you paint these door handles properly? do you rig them to stay open while you work?
i was going to do the passenger side but i figure i would wait and have a little paint day so i can repaint the bumper and the new (used) door im getting.
i know the paint process is sand, primer, color, and clear coat but i understand there are more stages of sanding i have to put in somewhere.
i wish i had all the professional paint tools but oh well. a spray booth would be sweet but i have no access to one.

check the color in all lighting conditions, no way if you spray JUST the door handle will it match the door.
It will be close, but it wont match, no way no how.
But anyhow- see if you can get the paint in a single stage so you dont have to bother with the clearcoat.

yeah do yourself a favor and just go to harbor freight and buy a $20 gravity feed spray gun. then go to an automotive paint supply store and buy a pint or quart of black. PZ is the paint code that you need to tell them you want..you can get single stage acrylic enamel or base coat clearcoat..the single stage will be easier for you and cheaper because the clearcoat is mixed in with the black so all you need to do is spray it like you would spary paint.. you will end up spending about $50 total for paint gun and paint. and you should have an awesome finish thats impossible to get with a rattle can. also i forgot to add that you need to buy lacquer thinner to clean your gun, do it immediately after your done painting..

for a door handle in good shape all that is required is a good scuff with a gray scotch pad.
if the paint is broken, scratched, and in poor shape then yes sand it down, otherwise scuff it and it will come out better and require no primer.
Its not exactly a large area that is easy to get a piece of sandpaper to conform to.

Dupli-color also makes a black gloss/semi-gloss type of paint that they call "trim paint". On the can, it says that it "restores OEM Black. I've used it on several different cars and it seems to match OK. It comes in a green, 11 0z can. It has a stock number "TP70".
