Imagine if
rotary engines were mass produced before piston engines were used in the standard automobile. If wankel engines came out instead of ford motors in the early 1900s. And if 90% of cars were rotary engine powered all these years. Do you think we would have a better automobile overall than we did?

...there's no Heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky....
Sorry, couldn't resist.
I think the piston IC engine was a progression from piston steam engines. Could a rotary be used as an external combustion steam engine?

If everyone drove Wankel cars (LoL! Right, driving rotary...), I probably wouldn't drive an FC, but one of those rare Otto engine powered cars with the interesting complecated engine design.

Well if rotaries were basically the standard that means more companies would be more effort into perfecting them so I feel the rotary would have evolved into something much more reliable like what we have with piston motors today.
Of course the exact opposite could also occur but think about it. Since piston motors are the standard naturally most of the R&D in engine development is going to go to piston motors...so if rotaries were standard I'm sure it would be a similar situation.
..but I still have to agree with most of the above posts haha

Global warming would have consumed us all by now
it would be nice to think that by now someone would have made a Eco Friendly Hybrid rotary.
and Germans would rule the world

I couldn't have said this better myself. I try to get everyone to convert. More interest = more development.

Love it. I just wish they spent more time making the rotary engine reliable and fuel efficient, had more people working on it for longer, more models and I think competition could have forced them to make the engine better. I love the rx7 no matter what though.

Hmm... I'm gonna go with "a better rotary engine due to more R&D" For 1000 Alex.
The 16X, the Hydrogen RX-8, multi side port... All things that would've happened sooner.
What is... Nirvana? lol
