Best aftermarket stereo install kit for FC?
Hey all,
Looking for a good aftermarket stereo mount kit for the FC. MY new 88 vert (well, new to me) has a stock radio/casette/EQ installed, but doesn't work very well.
I picked up a cheapo for my SE a few years ago that was a big P.O.S. It appeared to fit about 3,478 different vehicles, and I probably could have done a better job with a box of legos.
But I can't seem to locate one anywhere that looks any better than the one I have in my SE. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Links or info to purchase also requested.
THanks,
RR

I'm in the same boat as you.
Not to mention, the blower motor/heater core is RIGHT F-in there so i can't slide my monitor all the way back. I dont care though. I refuse to go without heat or ac in a daily driver EVER AGAIN.
DIY may be the best option if nobody comes through b/c i'd sure like to find an install kit that doesn't suck.

LOL. When I got my 88SE the AC compressor was locked up. I thought, no big deal. But damn there's a lot of heat coming up through the shift boot and center console. Didn't take me long to round up a compressor. Paid $200 for the car, close to $300 for the rebuilt compressor. Fixing the air doubled my investment in the car, but worth every penny!!!

Yeah, the one-size-fits-all install kits do look kind of junky. If you can find one of the Mazda OEM center stack storage cubbies (from a car that didn't have an equalizer), you can sometimes work that in to fill part of the gap below the head unit, but you're still sort of stuck using some part of the black plugs from a kit. Unless you fab up something yourself.

I think he's just looking for a bracket.
I know Crutchfield supplies Scosche brand stuff and I know Metra is pretty popular.
Manntis on this forum used to make an AWESOME one that had slide out cup holders and all sorts of cool stuff... Laser cut aluminum.... Unfortunately, he's no longer producing it and hasn't for YEARS.

Well, I'm looking for an entire kit, but it's the faceplate/panel part that I think sucks on my SE. I could fab something, but my "to do" list is already plenty long. I've just seen some of the panels in the mount kits my son has had on a couple of his newer vehicles (2002 Intrepid, 2001 Silverado, etc.). Nice and clean... look like they were actually made to fit the vehicle rather than part of an erector set.

In that case, let me renew my suggestion that you try to find an OEM storage cubby. They had them on S4 and S5; I think either series could be adapted to your purpose. I'm attaching a photo of the old one from my '90 GTU. That part number was FC03-55-23Y in the 89-90 Parts Fiche. May still be in stock from Mazda if you can't find a good used one. You could put that at the bottom of the center opening and then you'd have a smaller void to fill with the Erector set crap at least.
The cubby for the GTUs was nearly double the size of this one because they were equipped with an AM/FM radio only. It might actually be too big to fill the hole below a standard modern head unit, but maybe worth a look. That part number is FC04-55-235.

I bought a dash install kit for a mazda pickup and just modified it to fit. Its been a couple months since I did this and its been working fine. I just cracked the center console plastic when I was taking it off so I need to get a new one.

Pioneer Premier Deck, Pioneers all the way around. 800watt amp that came with the car and 1, 12" RF Punch2.
Sounds perfect. Although I hate lots of bass, so my subs not set too high.
Alot of haterz on subwoofers in here, but whatever, I bolted my **** down, so I'm the only one doing events bumpin! And I love music!

So long as you don't drive through neighborhoods at midnight with them cranked all the way up...
Those are the ******** that bring the sub hate... Just like the idiots who not only have their subs all the way up fly through my 25 MPH neighborhood at 40 in 2nd gear in their Civics with fart cannons...
I get flak from my neighbors because I have an FC with RB header, 2.5" cat, and XSpower Stainless Catback (I think it's 3 inch tips.) Until I fired it up for them... I leave the silencers in the mufflers. And I usually idle through the neighborhood... And I've got no stereo...
Which is why I originally bumped this. I need to figure out how to secure a head unit in my GXL.
The old owner removed his head unit and I found the plastic mounting kit cracked.
I need an all metal mounting kit. Preferably something that uses ISO-DIN installation, as I hate those sheetmetal DIN rings.
I'll pick up the stock pocket form Malloy later.
Any suggestions?

Like I said, my bass isn't even that loud, I just like to feel it. Even when I got the volume all the way up, you can barely here it outside of my car unless all the windows and sunroof are down, even then its not bad.
