The guy doesnt know he's selling it to me yet!

He's got a gaggle of Mazda rotary's, most of the models in fact, so may not be too enthused about selling it. Long way off any ways, a few hours have to go into the FD first!!

Got to love old skoolers though :-)

Just helped with a 20B install into an RX-3 today (sort off).

Engine # D121

Obviously from a 95 model Cosmo.

Check the pic of the engine (dummy) fitted into the RX-3 coupe.

David,

I've heard that the RX3's are a bit front heavy already before dumping a 20B into them - any views on this? A mate has 2 RX3 's, both sedan's though and I'm a sucker for the coupe :-(

Love to do it though as we dont have any 20B's in any thing over here :-(

FD first though :-)

PS good stuff getting onboard with Zoom! Look forward to my next subscription delivery :-)

I've got # 756. I'm not sure if it's ever been apart, but somebody has, at one time, possibly replaced or flow checked the injectors. Also, the tops of the rotor housings have F, C, and R stamped on the little raised squares. Perhaps it's been rebuilt once? Or do they all come like that? Also, #756 is stamped on all the cast irons as well.

It's one of those "problem engines" and if I run it NA, it should last a really long time.

I have a 20B also. You might remember that the latest series of them had a reinforced eccentric shaft as the earlier ones kept breaking in the middle. Many engines were retrofitted with the beefier crank. My 20B number is 666 (ha ha beat that). No I never looked. It is packed for moving to my new residence.
Also the latest versions had black intake manifolds, I believe. Earlier are alum.

I have looked at early eccentric shafts and late ones and
i see no difference between the two, someone said that
there was a small chance, which i looked for and couldn't
see, i am sure that the only difference is in the strength
of the housings.

Remember when I posted this engine? Well, I found out it is number B410. The intermediate housing somehow escaped the grinder.

This is a basic way to understand your 20B engine

000 - 999 = 1st batch
A000-A999= 2nd batch
B000-B999= 3rd batch
C000-C999= 4th batch
D000-D999= 5th batch
E000-E999= 6th batch....??

I have never heard of an F-series. Since Mazda made just under 4000 20B version Cosmo's I can also picture that the E-series was for warranty replacements if they exist at all.

If the engine has black on the rotor housings & the batch number stamp isn't on there, then its an internal factory rebuilt engine. "Waranty engine" (meaning its been out in a car & returned after failing within the warranty period)

In the early 90's when the 1st engine batch (000-999) Cosmo's started failing with alarming regularity, Mazda would dump the dead engines. This is why hundreds made there way to Oz & NZ.
As Mazda struggled financially through the mid 90's, they stopped chucking the dead engines & started to rebuild them in the engineering shop. They where then ready to go back out as a new warranty replacement engine. (black painted rotor tops) This saved Mazda a small fortune as entirely new engines didn't have to be manufactured anymore. Plus, production was slated for termination meaning the engine run would cease to.

The last engines to go into a car would have stopped around "D500" for fitment into a Cosmo. For example.........

The last Cosmo sold by Mazda = JCES-100633

However, Mazda quote selling just 369 examples of this series-II version so how it got to #ioo633, I really don't understand.

The latest Cosmo we have ever imported is JCES-100309. Its engine batch # was D442. It was a AUG-95 car & production ceased in Sep-95.

I just checked mine. It has been overhauled and 13b housings where used. The front plate is stamped A636. I have another 20B that I just pulled out of a cosmo. It was the original engine and the #3 rotor went. I'll check the exact year and what # is stamped on the motor. The firing order of the 20B I have in the fc is 1-3-2. I thought I had gotten the firring order mixed up and looked it up on another site and found 1-2-3. That didn't go over to well. Anyways I checked into it more and found 1-3-2 and it fired up no problems.
