The Getrag trans is 4" shorter than the TII trans. That is absoutely perfect for me since I have moved the 20b back ~4". This is not counting the adapter plate thickness though. Couldn't be too hard to relocate the shifter though if needed.
Plus, I just got in on a Cobra 8.8 IRS diff conversion for 2nd gens. Oh yeah baby....

Doc,
given your objectives i agree 100% w you. i should have posted that the gears are too short for me...
as to 6th being overdrive.... it certainly is. it is .79.... but yes, you do need to run a longer rear gear to stretch out top speed.

I'm in for a supra setup. I've been looking for a long time at them, and spoken to you (Carlos) about building my 20b. I know you've recomended the trans setup to me before, and I'm still collecting parts for the build.
I'm certainly interested, and willing to put down money if you'll do a group buy for the first few. Seems like you could sell them tomorrow.

Already sourced my Getrag in need of a rebuild. I'm stuffing the dog ring gear set in it.
The going rate seems to be:
Used and neeeds a rebuild ~$1700
Used and in operable cond. ~$2800
Rebuilt ~$3200
New at cost ~$4500
New retail ~$6500

For those pm'ing me, I sourced the trans from one of the larger Supra forums.
http://www.supraforums.com/forum/index.php?
I don't think there are any others currently available there right now though.
There are several more forums btw and it does seem, at least from the browsing I did, the trannies are snapped up pretty quick when they do become available. I got the only available one I could find ad it happened to be just what I was looking for, i.e. in need of a rebuild. Then again I only looked for a few little bit. e-bay proved worthless fwiw.

This might have been brought up before but the V160 (93-96) had shorter ratios than the V161 (96-02)

Is it the same tranny though (exterior-wise)? Cuz I may see if I can source a JDM one then Can someone post up the calculated theoretical top speeds for the JDM version (V161)?
Thanks!

Explain to me why you keep trying to gear the car to do 140 in 4th? I realize that 4th with the FD trans is 140 with the numbers you put in, but why do you want the supra trans to run 140 in 4th?

take your pick there are lots of ways to look at trans ratios.
since my interest is comparing ratios to the box i plan to use, the T56 C5, and it has a 1 to 1 4th i want to see if you put a rear ratio in that delivers a similar speed... what are the top speeds in each gear. further, i picked 140 as that's the number in the stock FD with which i am most familiar.
Doc, should you wish to do it a different way, please feel free.

My opinion of a T-56 tranny is that it's just a waste of time gear ratio wise as a 6-speed. It's basically a 4-speed with two overdrives one of which is useless. Not to mention it was never designed for quick shifts at high rpms. Ask me how I know.
G-force and Liberity transmission do make some upgraded stuff that helps in the shifting department though.
The Getrag supra tranny is probably the best all around except for it's way too low 1st gear ratio for use with the final drive ratio of an rx-7 on a high horsepower application. Even the supra guys complain of this and often use second gear for hard launches especially if they are not using the stock final drive of the turbo 6-speed supra and did the conversion in a a supra that was either a 5-speed, automatic or NA application before. More positive points for the Getrag would be it's strength and high rpm shifting qualities something to which I also have experienced personally.
Richmond also makes a very good 6-speed transmission but the shifter location does require some serious surgery because it sits towards the driver's side of the transmission tunnel. Some very good ratios are available for this tranny though. On the downside this tranny also exibits poor high rpm shifting qualities even worse than the T-56 in stock form but also can be improved upon by the two companies listed above.
I'm going to be experimenting with one of these--->

Crispeed, thanks for your input I've heard the same thing re: the T-56 and shifting @ high rpms over and over from different sources. I'm thinking a Getrag w/ a 3.9 (auto) rear would help quite a bit re: the Getrag's gearing. Plus it's a real simple job to do; no crazy fabrication of a different diff cradle and installing a new diff etc.
Of course, if one tries the 3.9 and finds it STILL not where one would want to be, THEN we can explore a more complicated setup that would allow us to run whatever rear we'd want (eg. Jimlab's 8.8" Cobra IRS rear).
The one thing I'm curious about is, what's the ratio on the TII or any other earlier RX-7 rear diffs? Any of them lower than 3.9?

3.9 is as tall as you'll get for RX7's that is out of cars equipped with an auto. Those gears will fit in the fd diff housing but not in the TII diff housing iirc.
I have found three sources that have plenty of rebuilt 6-speeds w/ 12 month warranties (sure ) for ~$3300 and one guy who only has new transimssions for $4400.
Unforrtunately the guy I found with the 6-speed in need of a rebuild decided not to sell it. I'll only put those PPG gears in one that needs a rebuild because of the cost difference. In the meantime, I'll keep looking....
