Is studding or Extra dowels needed on a early series block.

Anyone with any input on a early series motor running 450-550whp. Are studs or extra dowels even needed.
The car is not going to be drag raced or revved high. A oil pan brace will be used and a the rotating assembly will be dynamically balanced.

Any input?

I would not pin that motor. You are putting fairly minimal stress on it, and pinning a 20B is tricky because there is little extra material around some of the tension bolt holes. Studding is better, but expensive and not really necessary.

The one thing I would recommend is to use a FD rear iron, as the weakest point of the early series engines is the rear iron dowel land, similar to a s4 TII iron. This is much simpler and more important than pinning IMO.

If you are confident in your tune, then even that is not really necessary, but it is better to run a 800hp engine at 600 than the other way round.

what about when you go up ot a higher hp amount? would you recommend studding then? I considered larger diameter tension bolts like the factory fat tension bolts in the 20b and just machine the holes so they are snugly in the holes like the alignment pins.

I would consider doing a 3 pin or 5 pin but that would be it. As long as your tune is good and everything is working properly studding the block is not neccesary imo. Last block I saw that was fully studded did not survive detonation lol

Seen 1000whp on a 5pin....

I spoke with another rotary specialist today and they advised dowel pinning and studding. I'm so damn confused.

lol same here bro.
THEORY: If i could find hollow dowels that are say 12ga that fit tight in all the dowel holes the length of each tension bolt that would significantly strengthen the block.

Im gonna do some testing in solidworks and see what I can come up with. I might just be chasing my tail but oh well.... its worth a try.

But its true. One good ping at with boost and nothing will help

Here is another alternative that Rotorooter93fd found that i think is a all around better solution if they make these for the 20b
