Rebuilding a 20b

How much does it take to rebuild a 20b? I've heard that they cost upwards of 30 grand to put the 20b in but im just curious how much is will take to rebuild. Also, how come they say 20b's are more reliable? Is it just because of the low psi or is there something else.

They can make more power at lower boost levels. Thats why they are more reliable. You don't need to push them that hard to obtain high out put. You would have to use more mods on a 13B to get it to produce that same amount of power. So in short a 20B can make the same power running say (depends on mods but this is hypothetical) 15-17 psi as a 13B @23-24 psi. so in a sense they are more reliable. the lower the boost and mods the lesser chance of a tunning mistake.

wait my last reply didn't even address the topic. I don't know the exact amout but if you are getting it done by someone else they will chage a lot more because it takes almost double the amount of time to rebuild a 20B cause of the extra rotor and intermediate plate to remove and check. You also of course need all seals for all three rotors and not many shops sell seal pakages for just 3 rotors mostly 2 rotor kits. so you might have to buy two 2 rotor kits and have parts for a spare rotor. in short its like what j9fd3s said you have more parts to check and buy.

I haven't searched into the prices of 20B gasket seal kits, but I bet you could be better off just buying (as FDdRIFTER2 said) two 13B kits and just having some left over parts. $30,000 is an insane quote for a rebuild on a 20B. Just from seeing what companies advertise for prices on their websites, I can't see it being more than $2000 to rebuild a 20B with stock parts. Even though it has an extra rotor/housing, it actually doesn't add THAT much time onto the basic rebuild process. I have a friend that worked at a rotary shop (I won't name which shop) and it would only take them about 30-45 mins to rebuild a 13B (after it is stripped down to the core). The apex seals should be the expensive part, more than all other seals and that labour.

That is not the quote for a rebuild. That is approx. how much to have it installed in a FD.

The rebuild will be in the neighborhood of $2.5K to $4.5K, depending on where you go, what needs to be replaced, porting, etc.

There are lots of extras when doing any conversion but if you are going to do the conversion, do it right. The cost comes from the fabrication involved when installing. Some of the basic decisions are as follows::

- subframe or move the firewall
- if subframe...the steering box needs to be ground down
- which intercooler....has a direct relationship to the fabrication required to fit the intake elbow.
- electrical system....which one to use?
- fuel system...stock or aftermarket.

Many people make the mistake of building a car from the front to the back. They first put in an engine with double or more the output of their stock engine and wonder why the transmission goes. The transmission gets replaced and then the driveshaft goes. Once everything has been upgraded, either the diff goes or the axles go. What I am getting at is the engine is the cheapest part of the project. It is properly matching everything else to go with the engine that costs the bucks. I

did the fd conversion and love the car. I am on the west coast of the states (where the car is kept) 4 times a year and always enjoy jumping in and running it.
