My 1000 dollar 20b runs

Back on the 4th of July weekend I found an ad on craigslist for 20b and 17b rotary parts... yeah, thats not a typo 17b... I said the same thing.... "This dude has no clue what he has"

so I call the number and an old man answers, says he has a 20b long block and a few 17b parts motors laying around in pieces(i didnt bother correcting the old man on the 17b stuff). I asked how much, and he replys 1000 for the 20b and 200 for the rest of the 17b stuff. So of course i get his info and told him it was sold and I will be there tomorrow to pick it up

I pack a few clothes and drove to Los Angeles the next morning in my 02 Jetta. Once in LA I borrow my brothers Toyota P/U and drive out to Riverside. Turns out he has a complete long block 20b and a bunch of 13b N/A parts laying around. I give the old man 1200 bucks and take everything... he even wanted me to take the work benches and engine stand lol

Once back in Venice, I go to my buddies shop where i break the long block down into a short block and shove it in the trunk of my Jetta . I gave most of the other 13b (not 17b) parts away to my friends

I spend the night at my sisters and the next morning I'm back on I5 headed north

The motor sat for a few years and and then sat again at my place for a few months...I had no idea if it would start let alone smoke like a chimney.

After selling off all my old stuff in order to by new stuff, I finally got it running

I have to thank The Wankler for the use of his cherry picker..Thanks Chris, I owe you

anyhow; long story short... here is a short vid... sorry for the crappy quality

here is a picture of a small amount of the crap that came with it

and here it is in the car... still need to finish up some details... but it runs

How much power does it feel like its making NA?

I'm critical of your intake setup.

I am using the Haltech e11v2. I don't know how much power it is making, I literally just got it going and have been working out the bugs and building a base map

as for the intake... It is temporary... As I am critical of it too

Thanks guys... the rain -x is some awsome stuff, highly recommend it for everyone

The 20b is a early non letter series motor #668 and looks to have been rebuilt at least once, possibly twice

I cant really comment on the power output yet since i havent even gotten on it very hard, but i did notice a bit more tourque right off the bottom end and pulls pretty nice up to 4ooo RPM (about 3/4 throttle acceleration). A few more days of messing with the fuel and timing maps I should be able to get on it.... find out what it's made of... but so far i like the way it feels

Poor old guy. lol, alwell. Great find!

How did an old guy like that come across such an engine. I mean, usually you know about this kinda of stuff when purchasing.

I can see it now, Grandson comes out to pick up his 20b,
Grandpa: "I told you to get that rotary crap out of my garage for the last 6 months, here is the money i got from selling it."
Grandson "WTF did you do old man!"

haha

actually the goal is 350 RWHP all motor. I have no need at this time for turbos, intercoolers, blow off valves, wastegates, boost controllers... some form of aux injection to keep things from blowing up..etc

When the motor is rebuilt it will get N/A rotors, a fat port job and custom intake...at least thats what i am thinking at this moment.... tomorrow could be a different story

He bought it to put into an airplane. He said he spent $4500 on it a few years earlier, but he had sold the house and was moving to Washington with his wife and didnt want to take all that stuff with him.

Check out my thread. A lot of the money was wasted due to poor workmanship and do overs. I've learned much doing the conversion - an expensive lesson though.
