Unbolted. All the sheet metal is coming back off in a few days to finish the drivetrain work and wire the ecu, so I told them not to bother. The panels and bumpers were painted off the car, but they made sure they were all in the right shape before painting.

The carpet work started yesterday and I'm getting closer to having everything I need to piece together the long block. I just need to get around to polishing everything -or hiring someone to do it for me .

It really looks good, I went back and read the whole thread and this is really an impressive project. What are you going to do when it is all finished? What classes are you planning on racing, ect

Thank you.

I'll drive it to work a few days a week and do some driver's ed events with it. If you are looking for a rational basis for all of this, let me know if you find anything .

I must say this is probably the most badass project on the club. This is something I only dream of doing once I get a nice job and my own TIG welder finally. I would most likely copy you, but only with my red R1.

Can you close your hood with the regular coolant filler neck?

Thanks

Yes. The motor is lower and further back than the stock 2 rotor. I wish I could have moved the 41lb turbo back more, but I didn't want to put the hot side too close to the intake manifold.

So do I! Unfortunately I'm on a 2 week trip for business trip. Last I heard they were in the process of cleaning out all the dust and crap that accumulated in the interior while it was in 3 chassis shops, and the paint shop. Hopefully it will be done by the time I get back.

polish it. i had the same question after i sandblasted all my stuff, and took the easy way out and left it. problem is the surface is kinda porous so any time you touch it with greasy hands, it leaves a mark that is pretty much impossible to clean.

The only update is, I'm still stuck in NYC on business. Living out of a hotel for 3 weeks with 4 days worth of clothes isn't even as fun as it sounds .

Just remember you can get 4 wears out of the underwear.
Inside, outside, frontside, backside.

It helps me on long business trips.

Damm!

That also depends on the individual. Some people use 'Inside, outside, frontside, backside' in just one outting!

I just read all 8 pages and think I creamed my pants a total of 12 times. It's about time for some updates huh? Yeah, video taping the first start-up is completely manditory. I'm planning on building a 20b with GT42R and Haltech for my FC. Other than body differences, mine will be very similar. Cheaper, but similar.

I just got back tonight at 10:00 and hopefully will be in town for the next few weeks. The carpet is done. If I can work up the energy I will go downstairs tonight and make room for the car in the garage so I can pick it up tomorrow. I'll post some pictures when I get it back.

The car is back in my possession and I have been working away on it. The first thing I did was strip all the sheet metal off the front of the car to make sure it is not accidentally damaged while I am working on it. I now have RX7 all over my spare room floor :p

Here is a shot of the carpet.

I am amazed at how soft it is compared to the stock carpet. The shop did a great job in leveling out the floor in both footwells. As per my request, they also installed a very nice scuff plate on the tunnel next to the accelerator pedal. I would like to add a heel pad also, but I am having trouble finding one that matches the red seats and trim. On a downside, they did not cut out most of the mounting holes, so I spent the better part of an afternoon hunting and pecking for hidden mounting points, cutting around them and test fitting parts. s. I will post more pictures of it once I get the interior back in and vacuumed. I obviously have a bit of electrical work to sort out also :p

The engine is (for the time being) back in the car. You can see in the background the amount of work that was done on the frame rail to accommodate the turbo.

This is roughly where I am going to mount the ignition coils (yes there is a 6th coil). They are made by Pantera EFI and are arguably the most powerful inductive coils on the market. I will be running them with the Pectel SQ6's on board high current inductive coil drivers. I don't have any pictures to show for it, but I spent a considerable amount of time trying to find room for the ecu behind the dash. Because the lower intake manifold is so close to the firewall there isn't space to run the wiring harness over to the stock ecu port without placing it above the manifold (which looks like ****). Instead I am going to use a Mil-spec connector near the middle of the firewall. This has a couple benefits. It reduces the length of the harness, and will require only one or two plugs to be disconnected to remove the entire drivetrain. The Pectel ECU is so small that I can mount in the driver side dash under the gauge cluster, or behind the storage pocket under the radio.

One of the things I learned late in the project is that the 20b intake manifold does not have a brake booster port like the FD manifold. I decided to run a single -6AN line from the booster to the manifold. Yes, I know I don't need a stainless line for this, but it is an extra piece I had lying around (that's my story and I'm sticking too it).

I have seen a few people thread an NPT fitting directly into the manifold. I'm not crazy about that idea since the casting is pretty thin, aluminum has a tendency to crack, and there is some tension on the fitting from the vacuum line. For that reason I am having a -6 AN male boss welded on. The end result should look something like this:

The reason the boss is up so high is to accommodate the throttle linkage (it's on the back of the 20b TB unlike the FD), and so I can move the vacuum line nipples to the area below it. There is not enough space for them behind the manifold -even after moving the firewall back.

Unfortunately, I am flying back to NYC tonight for the next week and will be in Boston next weekend, so everything has to come to a stop once again. Hopefully I'll be back in town the following week and can keep plugging away.

Carpet looks great! Are you keeping the red seats in the car?
