20B: Engine Builder and Turbo Suggestions Needed!!!
#28
Some ballpark pricing for various services from some of the builders would be awesome to have out for everyone to see. . .
Dowel pinning,
studding,
porting,
oil passage mods,
water jacket mods,
dry sumping,
lightening of rotating assembly,
balancing of rotating assembly,
milling for 3mm,
generic rebuild with clearancing etc,
any specialty services,
et cetera
. . . just some approximates for people to start baselining a build would probably put an end to a lot of PMs from dreamers and potentially serious clientele alike.

I would also like to have an idea on price for the services Calc mentioned above.
Although my car is already on the road, and all it really needs is more tuning (and wider tires), I have been thinking of selling it and doing another one. The information above would be a great help as I plan to do it a little differently next time around.

We gladly discuss pricing with people that are serious enough to contact us, basic rebuild and porting pricing is readily available on our website and always has been. A very small amount of research yields many answers http://www.banzai-racing.com/engine_rebuild_main.htm
More than half the things listed would only be needed on a purpose build $15K shortblock, for the most part you can take standard pricing and multiply by 1.5. There are no "magical" skills required to machining three rotors out to 3mm instead of two, same goes for dowel pinning, studding etc. However, we do not even recommend dowel pinning, we would rather stud the engine. We also stay away from 3mm seals for all the same reasons as with a two rotor engine. If a customer insists on having these mods we will quote them.

On a side note, going back over the receipts, wondering what I did & paid for, seeing "Engine Rebuild" on a receipt doesn't tell me all that much of what I was doing 4 years ago

Thanks. David is correct and Carlos did mine, as well. Guys, I will look at the bill again. I think I tried to calculate it out of a lumped amount for various things.
I will say that until I posted something, none of the people who were asked to post their prices would do so. So, pretty valuable, huh? Got some people to start putting out the information that was asked for. Had I said porting cost $35, would Banzai have responded? Barninger's billing is fair, but he's no accountant and its not easy to break out certain things from the subtotals. Sorry for that, but if the engine builders would simply answer Calculon's questions, this wouldn't be going on, now would it?
Banzai, let's start with you. Please post your pricing for the items Calculon listed. We shouldn't have to drag it out of vendors. You posted your porting prices readily enough, so add the rest. It would help these people out and might get you some new business.

I can usually just say $7-8k for just the long block and rebuild and it scares off 99% of the people.

We get the same thing, must be the same people doing the rounds.
We have actually had people call asking how much to convert their car to a 3 rotor thinking it was just a simple addition of another rotor to their existing engine.

I think I am on topic here, and yes I'm talking about the so call just finished 20b installed. If the owner of the car is going around telling people that he paid a company $41,00 for a 20b install and a certain company post another price, that's not even close to the price. Yes! I do find a problem with that, just trying find out which one is true.

This thread is starting to fill up with irrelevance again. Now its he said, she said without any facts.
However I would like to see some shops post up mre info on their pricing. I find this very informative.

Let me clarify what Zayrx7 is saying. He heard that a local owner paid $41k for the complete 20B swap with all parts and labor. I have told Zayrx7 to stay out of these threads and its really none of our business what somebody pays for the swap, as that is between the owner and the shop.

I still fail to see why other vendors outside of Defined Autoworks won't post prices for the simple, common items asked. Yes, we all know the sum of these costs won't be what one would pay for the entire job (much more goes into the 20B conversion than the items listed) but come on, why not post? Are your prices that out of line you are afraid it will drive customers away?
Take it from me, the guy that has probably paid the most for his 20B conversion due to many reasons including poor quality rework and unknown costs, it can only help you attract business by posting.
I don't know the Defined guys but I now have much more respect for them because of their willingness to tell us what they charge. I'm sure they'd never want to have to finish up my job (it's going to get done - really) but if I needed another shop to complete the work I would now put them on the list.

When you guys don't post your prices, it makes me feel as though you have something to hide. What risk do you have in posting this information unless your prices are considerably higher?
