Let's not forget about all those 18mm wrenches and sockets you'll need.

One thing I won't miss is adjusting the valves everytime I change my oil. VW's are alot of fun though. Maybe you could throw a 13b in the back of one, they make adapter kits!

Good luck with your VW, you will need it.
Seriously dude, I find it irritating how people will buy an old car, then replace almost everything that needs to be replaced on every old car, then say it is not reliable and get something else after they have replaced everything on their car . Whoever gets the seven after you will probably be very happy.

Hopefully, he means a new(er) VW. Not those old, "classic" (haha) Bugs.

Don't rip on him... the 7 is far from a reliable car. Fun, yes. Reliable, hell no.

I have had my 7 like 3-4 yrs,

It only left me stuck 3 times,

Ran out of gas,
Blew a coolant hose the the oil cooler.
Clutch lines cleaked after I changed my oil cooler o rings,

I have abotu $900. total in my car from the price I paid, down to the performance parts.I can say its reliable and I love it,

i never said it was reliable. all i said was that vw wasn't any better. pain to work on and even the new car's reliablilty doesn't seem to hot. a friend at my old job had a 2000 or newer jetta and it was in the shop all the time. she ended up trading it in and getting a nice ~2000 black on black 5speed accord with no problems since i last talked to her.

I think 12A FB's can be very reliable when they're properly taken care of. It's such a simple car! *Once you have everything sorted* there isn't much to go wrong, and the things that do go wrong are usually easy and cheap to fix.

OBVIOUSLY, if you buy one that has all old original parts or isn't in good shape, it isn't going to be reliable in that condition - that's true for any car! There isn't any 20 year car that's going to be reliable like a brand new Honda is, it's completely ridiculous to expect that.

Wasn't the 1st gen seven voted the most reliable sports car of the 80's?

I think that is what he is talking about. It is not reliable by today's standards, so he's going with something else.

I never said that it was a bad car, I just didnt find mine all that reliable. But thats just me. Now I am getting a 1996 VW GTi. The car is awsome, it has the 2.0 8v. Stock they are faster than a stock 7, and they get like triple the gas milage of a 7.

I still have props for the Rotary, I hope to get a TII some time in the future. But for now, I will be cruising a VW. By mid summer I should have a NEUSPEED Supercharger.

We all love cars right? Right, so lets just wish him luck. Go forth and modify with good taste...

I see a bunch of ugly cars out there, and it really just befuddles me why some people spend a bunch of money on stickers and wings and body kits that really don't do much nor look good.

Have fun with your GTi. I hope you have the time/money to maybe look into another first-gen down the line. Don't let a sour one turn you away!

Totally DUUUDEE!! Very true. Take care of your 7 and she will take care of you. My SE has stranded me ONLY once, due to a blown coolant seal. Totally not her fault. The shitty rebuild I got for her from mazdarecycling didn't help the matter either.... that's my fault too.. I ended up pulling that crapmotor out after less than 18K miles..If there's ever a "Is Mazdarecycling a good place for a rebuild?" thread... I'd be the 1st to reply...

and if you wanted reliability= HONDA
if you wanted great gas mileage= Prius
if you're a total tightwad= bus pass
and if I was broke?= I'd walk.

My brother has an '86 Jetta Wolfsburg Edition. Holy **** is it reliable. Over 350k miles, going strong. Engine internals have never been touched. Only thing that broke on the car in the 3 years he's owned it is one of his calipers seazed, had to replace it. VW's are a good choice for reliability.

But calling a rotary unreliable is just ignorant. You have to take care of it a little different than a piston engine, and it'll treat you great.

Putting in a new distributor / ignition system seems to be a pretty good reliability mod, no? Seems like MSD is quite popular. I'd just hate to have to be replacing the points all the time.

The lady looking to buy the Miata freaked when it threw an engine code (of course her grinding 4th gear into oblivion didn't help) and of course she decided not to buy.

The 7, after 167k glorious miles decides to blow out a clutch slave during rush hour.

The 02 GTI (you're right it IS awesome) finally pushed me over the edge when I discovered my clearcoat peeling off the rims.

Cars break.

Now I am a seven nubee, but I call BS when I see BS. I sincerely hope you enjoy your GTi, but don't make up sh/t like this to make it sound better. A 2.0 8v GTi does not get triple the gas mileage of any seven, and it may be faster that a stock 12a, but I doubt it. You have a 2550lb car with a 115hp engine that is rated by the EPA at 23city/30hwy mpg. Enjoy your hopefully reliable modern car, but don't diss sevens by calling you GTi as sooo much better based on nothing more than your guesses.

p.s.- I do like those GTis, they handle very well for a front driver, and have nice non-generic german styling.
