My new purchase is 506855 with a build date of 5/78 which is a low VIN for an east coast car I think.I bought it from the original owner about a month ago.64MGB has the lowest I have seen.

EDIT: I just checked this site: http://www.xs4all.nl/~erix7/rx7vin.html and it says that all SA's started with 500000, so it doesn't matter if it started as a non-U.S. car.

I'll try to get a pic up of the VIN plate. Apparently the first two numbers (12) signify a car that is for Japan only. I'll try to get the production date up with the VIN plate pic as well. I was just wondering if anyone had info on the early non-US VIN's. This is for a '78 Savanna 2+2. I've owned the car now for about three years, so it's kinda been my ongoing resto project. I've actually located an '83 Series 3 12aT here in the states, so I'm considering trying to sell my Savanna. I appreciate any help you guys can give. Take care.

Here's a pic that I already had hosted ... I'll try to get a closer shot tomorrow, along whit some other pic of the car. BTW, this did not start as a U.S. car. I bought it while I was in the Navy from a Marine that had brought it back from Okinawa. The VIN is difficult to read in this pic, but it's very visible when expanded. Here you go:

Okay, so that pic does suck ... but under the stamped VIN it says [0-12] (only in Japan). I'm curious if the SA22C-122168 designates a vehicle that was only for sale in Japan. Does anyone know if any Savanna's were sold outside of Japan? Additionally, how about the Series 3's; I know quite a number made their way to AUS, but were any actually sold there from Mazda? I'd be interested to see a VIN from a Series 3.

Series 3's? That simply means 84-85.
Savannahs? Sure, a ton made it here from Japan. They were actually sold A-Spec, they just dropped the Savannah monicker (RX3-7 were called Savannahs.)

My 1985 SA22Cs have the vin no 704986 for the convertible[engine 12AT 716 712] and the hardtop 709980 with 12A 249 0184. Both very late production.
If the first number was 500000 and 471,009 were built then the last vin should have been 971,009. What happened to the missing 250,000 Gen 1s?

They became FBs? I think the FB numbers were around 50,000 cars per year during the 1st gen production.
This shows the FBs started at 500001 and went to 912608 (plus the number of cars built in the last month).

Model Year VIN Ser Numbers
1979 SA22C - 500001 +
1980 SA22C - 600001 +
1981 FB33 - 500001 + (USA)
1982 FB33 - 600001 +
1983 FB33 - 700001 +
1984 FB33 - 800001 +
1985 FB33 - 856209 +
So, there is no correlation between an SA that started with 500000 and an FB that started with 500000. The SA is a '79, and the FB is an '81.

Yeah, I was just reffering to the 250,000 cars PaulFitzwarryne said were missing. That is why the SAs don't go from 500000 to 917000, if the 417,000 number is correct. The difference is because a large number of cars were released as FBs in North America and didn't follow the SA numbering scheme.
I used to own an '80 SA with a build date of 10/79. Can't remember the VIN, though.
