WOW, pretty sad....
well after cruising the 3rd gen section for about an hour, i got sick. You want to guess how many of them actually work on their own cars? VERY FEW!!!
Every thread i read is about how much money its going to cost them to have this mechanic do this, and this mechanic do that. It makes me proud to have a first gen where most repairs are done on our own.
No offense to anyone who has others work on their cars, i just hope you can at least change your own oil, or maybe put in a new starter.
just go check it out, i have no more to say......

I've always known the majority of third gen types to be nothing but ricers.
Hence the reason I stay away from third gens as much as I can.
I wouldn't want to be associated with that group.
Matter of fact, out of all the people in the Las Cruces RX7 club, NONE of them are FDs, and I plan to keep it that way.

agreed, my favourite part about my rx7 is the simplicity, im 17 and I can honestly do any work that will ever need to be done with it. IMO I would never to a rotary to a mechanic, overpriced to find a specialty place and some do shady work anyways...

I agree with dan. Im 18 and I just rebuilt mine. So Simple!!! It has been in the family ever since my dad bought it in 83 and no one else has touched it and Im not letting her cherry get popped by some mechanic who has no feelings towards her!

I agree with DanH, the gen3 is so complex you need time and to be a mechanical expert on that car. The tools required to work and tune it cost more than buying an FB.

FD owners buy it for the look i believe, if they really loved handling they would have an FC or an FB. Personally I believe an FC is probably the best out of the three gens, it has a combination of looks(fd) and good handling. But my love is for the FB, after i fit it into a uhaul to move it has been my favorite. now if i could only get another one, then get the jspec 12aT just so i can be different.

This thread is hilarious. I am currently doing a bunch of work on my friend's FD, and the thrid gen section is no help at all.
As far as FD's being hard to work on... The packaging is a lot tighter than a 1st gen, hbut the car is beautifully engineered, and servicing it is a piece of cake. Using hand tools and jack stands, I got the trans out in ~3 hours. That's not too shabby for my first time.

I believe the 3rd gen is just more complex than most people can handle. This is what happens when everything related to the engine is so technically superior to all other engines. Between the fuel injection system, and the turbo systems, there are so many little things that can cause problems, many of which are so similar that it takes a very well trained mechanic to tell the difference.
Hence, the reason I prefer my 1st gen. It still has the superior engine design, but lacks the complex induction and injection systems. Outside of the engine block, everything is no less complex than any other older car. Still, many shops will just see the "RX7" and say "We don't work on rotaries". Thats fine with me, I prefer to work on my own stuff, that way I know exactly what has been done, and how.

i've had all three generations......3rd gen is the nicest and most advanced. how many FC owners cars work 100% not alot either.........1st gens 95% of them are carbed ! nothing to break lol

I think most of the problems with the FD come in with the crazy sequential twin turbos. I don't know much at all about the setup, but the FI can't be a whole lot different than a 89-91 setup. IMO, Mazda should have just used a single turbo like on the FC, forget the sequential crap.
The FC section isn't a whole lot better for help. There are a few there that will help, but when I did my 13B swap I had to wait like 10 days just to get a little help about what a few of the wires do on the ECU. I thought that was totally rediculous. They also aren't very nice people sometimes. I'll just stick to the FB.

I agree with Jays83gsl statement. I have a 81 (14 years) a 84 auto(daughters)and current project is a 84 GSL-SE which has electrical troubles (a botched alarm system). I do all the
work myself. First Gens all the way!!!

Not sure I would agree with such a statement as "very few work on their own cars," in comparison of one model vs. another. It is fair to say it is more complex and requires more work, but that's about it.

would most definitly have to agree on the simplicity of the fb started working on mine when I was 15 and have been slowly gaining more and more knowledge the more I tinkered and checked out my favorite forum in the world...this one...lol...

I've owned alot of every generation, and when I first started only had FB's/ I thought there was nothing better, and had tons of excuses why the second gen and 3rd gen werent as good. But after owning both, The FD is supreme in handling and performance, and the FC is somewhat below it, and both make the FB feel like a vague old car. But I still love the FB for the simplicity and rugged nature. Just dont lie to yourselfs about the performance.

3rd gens are a lot more complicated than 1st and 2nd gens. I built my turbo SE myself but when I look at the FD engine bay I get a headache! My limited experience with 3rd gen owners on the forum, some are vey helpful but the majority think they know everything and try to belittle everybody else.

On the people saying the FC is the best RX7: I can't disagree more.
They just don't feel SPORTY enough, like I feel RX7's should. They feel like an American sports car, and I can't stand to think there's a rotary driving me.
As I stated before, I sold TWO FCs, and kept the non-running FB. Do I regret it? HELL NO!

I do everything but the body work and paint. I also have met many friends on this board that are more then willing to come and help if I need it! Thats the best thing about 1st gens, the forum is much nicer and people are willing to help.
How many posts have you seen in the 1st gen section on fyling a professional tunner into town to work on your car? Don't need too because its simple.
