Is it worth it? New to RX7

Hello.
I have recently become really interested in getting an RX-7.
Right now I am driving my dad's 1987 mazda 626GT, but it needs some work, and I would like my own car.
I was wondering if an RX7 would be the right car for me?
I really want something that is quick, and that I can upgrade and work on.
I am going to be using for commuting back and forth between here, and college, which is about 14 miles away.
I will also be using it for general driving.

I found this car -
1984 RX7

And I really like it.
I would like to know what you guys think about that car.
Is it worth the money?
About how fast would it be?
I am hoping to find something that can keep up with my friends 1994 BMW 330IS that runs a 15sec 1/4 mile.

Would an RX7 require a lot of upkeep?
And how is the gas mileage?

Any help would be great.
Thank you.

They made a 330is in 1994 (e36)

Gas mi. is not very good.

They are pretty reliable. You should be capable of working on it when you do need to, and preventitive maintinence is very important.

With some mods you will run 15's in the 1/4

I think it looks like a nice car.

Yeah they did.
His was an auto, and he converted it to a 5 speed.
He keep the real differential though, and it is really fast off the line.
The high end sucks, he redlines in 5th gear when he hits around 100mph I think.

You will most likely need to do any work yourself, as quality rotary mechanics can be hard to find, although Mt. Peak Automotive in our area (western WA) is recommended by many on our NW forum. Stop by the forum to ask around and see who has 1st gens for sale.

I'd say seeing as how you are not commuting very far I'd go for it. One thing, in the pics it looks like the header panel has a huge dent in it/

That seems a bit pricey for what you're getting. I think for the same money you could probably find a car for sale in the classified section of this forum that had some of the basic mods on it. If you were looking for a similar car to the one you posted a link to, (basically stock and in good shape, but nothing special done to it) I think you can find a slightly better deal. Being in school you probably could use the extra bread for more important things (like beer, for example, or gas for your new car).

I think your choice of ride is a good one, though. The first-gen Rx7 is a great car for someone in your situation. It's quick enough to be fun to drive, can be made much faster later when you have the time and money, it's easy to work on, and you won't be the one stuck driving when all your friends want to go somewhere (because they won't all fit in your car. )

It looks like a nice car, but I wouldn't pay over 2,000 for it. I just bought an '84 in perfect condition with only 55k on the odometer, and was able to talk the guy down from the same price to below 1500. I suggest you try and do the same, considering it's way above BB and looks like it has a good sized dent on the front. The gas mileage on them isn't the greatest of any car, but it's not bad, either (below 20MPG city, slightly above 20 on the highway).

get the pale purple 1995 crysler le baron convertable ofr $2,495 instead.

$3k for a 20 year old sports car is too much of a gamble.

It's a nice car, but I agree, the price is to high. if you look around on the forum, you could probably find one for about 1/3 the price. I get around 20mpg in mine, and it's quick enough. good luck

I got my 85 rx-7 for $1,350 from a private seller. I think the blue book on it is around $1,400, maybe a little more. Definitely too high as mine had under 100,000miles original, and this was only a few months ago. Also, I was looking at 15 rx-7s 1st gen, so they're out there.
