Worst Winter Driver Ever

Just got our first snow fall in southern Ontario and I took the rx out for a drive before the plow had a chance to go through town. I was doing fish tails the whole time. This is looking like its going to be a fun winter.

My buddy drove his 81 in Ohio snow for years, Said it was the best car he had for the snow. He used the stock wheels with stock size tires.

I drove my first FB for two winters with Bridgstone Blizack Snow Tires (185 70 R13) and the care was a champ. No problems what so ever. I was the only one that did not get stuck that year!!

Snow Tires are your friend, but they are NOT a 100% fix good winter driving practices are still required

use stock sized winter tires as everyone has said, learn how to control the car better and it will be fine. The FB is great in snow if you do it right...

What? And miss out on all the fun? No, that just won't do!

Seriously, my advice is to take the car to an empty parking lot and start spinning out. You gotta get a feel for what the car does on ice, so that you can put to that to use in an emergency. FWIW, I hit the gas on every icy corner where I have no risk of crashing into something, so that I won't be frozen in panic if I ever need to control the vehicle in such circumstances.

Aside from that, everyone else is right. Go to 185 tires, or even a litte skinnier if you're really concerned. Fat tires are hopeless in snow; my RX can plow through 2 feet of snow, yet my bro's iroc gets stuck in 2 inches (literally). Also, get ice tires. The Blizzack's or the Yokohoma Ice-Guard are amazing (not Michellen - the ones with the walnut chips are crap). Make sure your front tires are inflated properly. Last, throw some sand bags in the back for weight, and you'll be fine. Oh, and practice, practice, practice.

Well.. here in Saskatchewan we get some of the worst winters I've heard of and my 7 has survived the 3 winter's i've owned her. Never been stuck, stock size tires... only complaint i've had was slide around when accelerating.. and the complaint was from other drivers.

My 7 won't touch the harsh winters here in Canada...I wouldn't be worried as much about the snow as I would be the amount of salt that we tend to put down on the roads...

yea, I'm not sure what you guys are doing wrong, but NJ gets pretty nasty storms sometimes and I can plow through a good amount of snow with mine. As was said earlier, practice sliding it and get used to it.

yeah, i call BS... my SA was great in the winter, you just have to know how to drive, and accept the fact that you're gonna be countersteering.

even my volvo is like that, for a skilled driver, RWD is better in the winter, for the majority, FWD is to be preferred, less ways to get into trouble (allthough when you do, its harder to get out of... but we're talking about mundane drivers). We'll just leave AWD out of this, cause it's just better in snow all around.

driving in winter is a whole lot better down here.

beautifuly clear, cold nights. not snow, very little rain.
the car loves the cold air.

but then again, driving in summer, cant push it too much else she'll overheat. damn 40 degree heat

we had about 4 inches the other day and i left for work before any plows got out, i must say that was a scary experience, but i've gotten used to it now, so no worries. I bought some cables for the tires just in case we get more than a few inches...so i should be good to go. By the way anyone else PLOW snow with the front end of their car???

yea my car is so low that the lower valence acts like a plow and just shoves its way through the snow. Very entertaining, the worst is when the snow starts collecting in front and lifts the front end up off the road, "oh ****, theres no steering" haha, I love driving in snow, its so fun. Right now I have 4 snow tires on the car, but I have a set of spikes I plan to put on the rear sometime soon, we'll see how those work out....

It's too warm here...

They salt the road every time three flake of snow falls, so that is way too hard on the FB to drive it in the winter...

I wish it was too cold for salt, then I could drive my FB all year round...

No way I'd try it. Mine is packed away 'til May or so every year. There's so much salt on the roads around here that the pavement is white. If you're on back roads, it's ice. Plus you have to watch out for all the crazy Mass-holes in their 4 wheel drive/spin/slide SUV's sppeding to the ski resorts. Your beloved RX-7 would be flat or rusted out in no time! I can't remeber ever seeing an RX-7 on the roads here in the winter. If I did, I would assume it was the driver's only car.
