won't stay running

hi,
i have an 85 gsl 12a with a motor that was just rebuilt by kdr and the carb was just rebuilt also. the problem is the car won't stay running. it will start but won't run longer than a second or two. i've checked the bowls and the fuel level is right, fuel is steady to the carb, changed fuel filter, i'm going to loosen the exhaust just to make sure it doesn't have a clogged cat. other than that any suggestions would be helpfull. thanks, vic

Okay, you say it won't stay running. Does it sputter and die? Does the idle slowly fall off until it stops running? Does the engine stop running after the key is turned back form the start possition to the run possition? When it starts is there a lot of black smoke? Does it stay running when you give it some gas, or does the engine just kind of fight to stay running and still die?

when i turn the key and it finally starts, it will only fight to stay running for a couple seconds even if i give it gas. i can have the choke out half way, all the way, or not out at all and it still does the same thing. no black smoke. the machanic that had the car said it will stay running if he continually sprayed wd40 in the carb. i haven't tried it yet though. any ideas? thanks, vic

Sounds to me like a huge vacuum leak. Check your hoses and connections between the lower intake manifold to the block, the lower to upper intake maifolds, and the carburetor to the upper intake manifold.
