winter storage w/leaking gas tank?

Howdy all. I'd like some opinions from those of you who know much better than I. I'm getting ready to put my '84 GSL-SE targa edition away for winter storage (If I ever find garage space for rent...). I bought it this summer, and fixed many things, but not my leaky gas tank. If you fill it up more than halfway it leaks from somewhere up top. Should I remove the tank before winter storage since I can't fill it up and treat the gas in it? If I leave it sit for a couple months with about five gallons in it will the rest of my allready crappy tank rust? Your input is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Depending on the year of the car, you may have a drain plug on the bottom of the gas tank. If I were you I would drain out the gas. If you plan on storing it anyway, I would go ahead and remove the leaky gas tank and either find a replacement or fix the leak throughout winter. That is just my suggestion though.

Cool

Trust glitch about draining the tank. As for the leak, it is probably from around the filler neck. The rubber is most likely all cracked. It could be rust though. Once you drain the tank, drop it from the car and see it there are any holes from rust thru. If you are lucky, the tank will be intact. Good luck.

The '84 should have a drain plug (my '83 does). The tank is easy to drop. Remove the screws under the gas lid that hold the filler neck on. Jack it up and remove the driver side wheel. Remove the shields around the tank. Disconnect the fuel level sender wires and the fuel lines (keep track of where they are connected). Remove the two strap bolts in the front of tank and it will fall to the ground

Google and look for a POR 15 clean/seal kit. They make a tank repair kit as well.

I've had mine off twice for cleaning (radiator shop then POR 15 kit). You can put it back on by yourself, but it's easier with someone helping.

Since it's going into storage, drop the tank and have it repaired for spring start up. While it's in storage, make sure you cap off the fuel lines so they don't corrode from the inside out. Since you have an SE, you need an SE tank for replacement if it cannot be repaired.

If you don't have a copy of the FSM, there is a link in my sig line. There is also an excellent thread in the archives on prepping a car for storage.
