Windshield with frit band
#27
Yeah definitely be sure whoever is installing the windshield knows how to do one on these cars properly. Most new cars require a bead of glue twice the thickness of what we need. As mentioned above, if the glue is applied too thick, the trim won't fit correctly, or at all.
If I remember right it only takes a bead of glue about 3 or 4 mm thick for an FB - I was told that by a glass installer who had been in the business since the late 80's and had done dozens of FB's back in the day
Looking forward to seeing how you make out with that ebay seller

Me too! We'll find out here soon!
If they can get the FW00380 then it won't have the frit band. I just think it's a lot cleaner for the bottom of the dash, and the A pillar trim. The frit covers the adhesive from breakdown over time and any imperfect trim installs.

That sounds about right. They were trying to install the one that didn't fit with huge amounts of butyl tape. I knew it was wrong.

Like rwatson said It would ruin it. It's basically melted into the glass. I'm not sure of the exact procedures, but it's intended to be permanent.

It shouldn't go that high to the vin. My factory one didn't and it had the frit band. I'm not sure how the 79-80 dash is near the bottom of the windshield. I'd imagine it's the same 79-83. My dash has a black rubber like seal on the very back of the dash. It's only visible with the clear windshields. With the frit it's supposed to cover the adhesive and this seal at the bottom.
Which ever route you go make sure you test fit the windshield first.

Herb,
You should be able to get the clear windshields with just the sunshade tint up top at safelite if they can get you the frit one. If not check other local glass shops and see if they have the same part # for the glass. The clear glass part # is FW00380. Check with technaglass is you have one locally. That's where I got mine I'm trying to replace.
Still waiting on shipping for my PGW windshield from ebay. Hopefully here soon.

My windshield came in! Full frit band all the way around and it fits! I just did a dry test fit and I should have it installed in the next week. The search is done!
Here's a picture of the full part # for anyone else who might be interested. I highly recommend the seller autoglass4u on ebay. Extremely helpful throughout the process and answered all the questions I had. Very thankful for Jay helping me there.

2005 I messed up my windshield. Safelight said they didn't carry the seal. I tried a hole in the wall body shop. It had a rusted hunk of a impala body outside. This was the kind of place that didn't bat an eye to welding and bonding car bodies together to make a pristine classic car. As opposed to someone that thought if it wasn't in a catalog, it didn't exist.
Anyway, the hole in the way place replaced the windshield.

Well, I finally got the windshield installed. Here's the final result. Just how I had hoped! Hopefully the struggle I went through finding the right windshield will help others who search in the future 😊
